🩸 BloodBridge – Bridging Life, Care & Awareness for Thalassemia Patients

🚀 Inspiration

We were deeply moved by the struggles of Thalassemia patients who face the dual burdens of frequent blood transfusions and long-term care. Many families face delays in finding matching donors, often during emergencies, and are unaware of proper genetic testing and support.
Our inspiration was to create a comprehensive support system that doesn't just react to crises but proactively assists, educates, and empowers patients and their families through technology.

We envisioned BloodBridge as a compassionate AI companion, built not just to connect donors, but to act as a central hub for support, guidance, medical clarity, and awareness.

💡 What it does

BloodBridge is an end-to-end platform that brings together:

  • 🩸 Real-time Blood Donor Matching: Smart matching algorithm to connect patients with donors based on proximity, blood type, and last donation date.
  • 🤖 AI-Powered Medical Assistant: Upload PDF medical reports and ask questions. Get AI-generated insights using semantic search over vector embeddings.
  • 🗣️ Agent AI Chatbot (Voice + Text): 24/7 multilingual AI assistant trained on FAQs, lifestyle guidance, and emotional support.
  • 🧾 Customized Diet Plans: Personalized based on age, severity, medical conditions, and cultural food preferences.
  • ⚠️ Emergency Mode: One-click trigger for urgent blood alerts that notify verified donors, hospitals, and caregivers via SMS/email.
  • 🏥 Doctor & Hospital Connect: Verified network of hematologists and Thalassemia treatment centers mapped to your location.
  • 📚 Awareness Hub: Interactive posters, myth-busting cards, videos, genetic testing education, and patient stories.
  • 🔒 Privacy First: All health data encrypted and access-controlled using Supabase Auth and row-level security.

🛠️ How we built it

Frontend

  • React.js for fast, responsive, and accessible UI.
  • Clean design with light green/white palette and dark mode toggle.
  • Modular components built using TailwindCSS and Material UI.

Backend

  • Node.js with Express to build robust REST APIs.
  • Real-time socket implementation for blood request status updates.
  • API endpoints secured with JWT.

Database

  • Supabase (PostgreSQL) used for authentication, user data, blood inventory, reports, and logs.
  • Row-level security policies enforced.

AI Layer

  • Gemini Model for natural language understanding and FAQ chatbot.
  • Pinecone Vector DB for medical report parsing and Q&A using semantic search.
  • LangChain integration for chaining prompts, memory, and context control.

Automation Layer

  • n8n workflows to automate:
    • Report ingestion into Pinecone
    • Blood request escalation alerts
    • Email/SMS notifications to donor networks
    • Periodic checkups/reminders to patients

Deployment

  • Frontend: Vercel
  • Backend: Render
  • n8n: Self-hosted on EC2
  • Pinecone: Cloud API
  • Supabase: Hosted

🧱 Challenges we ran into

  • 🧾 Parsing varied PDF structures for medical reports and ensuring accurate vector embeddings.
  • 🧠 Ensuring the AI remains accurate and non-misleading, especially for medical guidance.
  • 🧬 Dealing with sensitive health data securely and ethically.
  • 🔁 Syncing multiple services like Supabase, Pinecone, and n8n in real-time with minimal latency.
  • 📲 Balancing a lightweight UX for rural users while offering feature-rich dashboards.

📚 What we learned

  • The power of semantic AI over vector databases in domain-specific healthcare applications.
  • How to design an app that balances utility with empathy – both functional and emotionally comforting.
  • How modular no-code/low-code tools like n8n can bridge gaps quickly for critical workflows.
  • Insights into healthcare data handling and privacy regulations like HIPAA and India’s DISHA guidelines.

🔮 What's next for BloodBridge

  • 📱 Launching an Android/iOS app for wider accessibility.
  • 🧠 Integrating a Mental Health Companion trained on psychological support for chronically ill patients.
  • 🌐 Partnering with genetic counseling labs and running localized awareness drives.
  • 💳 Introducing a “Care Wallet” to manage donations, treatment subsidies, and donor incentives.
  • 🧩 Plugging into state-level blood banks and hospital systems via APIs to form a national registry.

🧠 AI Ethics & Data Privacy

We ensured:

  • All user and health data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • AI responses are accompanied by a disclaimer and “consult doctor” notice.
  • Only verified users can access or edit medical information.
  • We do not store conversations unless explicitly consented.
  • Built-in flag/report feature for incorrect AI outputs.

🌍 Social Impact

BloodBridge isn’t just a tech product — it's a movement. By encouraging voluntary donations, educating rural families, and digitizing patient journeys, we aim to:

  • Reduce emergency delays for transfusions.
  • Educate families on genetic testing and prevention.
  • Support patients emotionally through community and AI conversations.
  • Enable doctors with better-prepared patients and pre-filled medical histories.

🎨 Design & UX Principles

  • Emotionally calming with a light green and white palette.
  • Accessibility first: clear fonts, readable text, and voice assistant.
  • Designed for low internet regions with offline-mode planning.
  • Responsive on all screen sizes — from mobile phones to clinics’ desktops.

🤝 Collaborators & Mentorship

  • We plan to onboard doctors, transfusion centers, and local NGOs.
  • Build an advisory council for medically validating AI models.
  • Collaborate with Blood Warriors to expand donor base and awareness.

💬 "Every drop counts. Every voice matters. BloodBridge is our step toward a future where no Thalassemia patient feels alone."
