Introduction

Blood sugar buddy is a 24/7 helpful assistant for Type 2 diabetes sufferers. It is a Google Home app that takes advantage of that platform's stunning speech recognition accuracy and near-perfect speech synthesis feature to deliver a friendly, infinitely patient, and knowledgeable assistant. It helps the user with the daily task of monitoring their blood glucose levels, using related equipment like home glucose testing kits, and in the future monitoring their daily food intake and mood quality with an easy to use reporting module.

Video

The video below shows a demo version of Blood Sugar Buddy running on a live Google Home device. Although much of the app has not been constructed yet, the video does show a real (unpublished) Google Home app assisting me through the first time use of a home glucose testing kit:

Team Potential

I am a veteran speech recognition and chat-bot developer with years of experience in voice based app design. My passion is designing apps that offer deep, flexible, user intent discovery and input conformance capabilities, along with complex dialog flow routing that can recover gracefully from poorly constructed or unexpected user input. Currently I am working in the medical field doing natural language processing and understanding work.

THE MANY COMPLEXITIES OF HOME GLUCOSE LEVELS TESTING

Home glucose testing units are fairly easy to use. However, they can be difficult for first time users since there are many steps to performing a test, and even experienced users can have various problems along the way, especially with trying to solve the problem of inaccurate measurements.

New users need to learn how to:

  • Administer the glucose control test to calibrate the unit
  • Clean the lancing device and meter
  • Proper handling and disposal of bio-hazardous waste

New and experienced users need to cope with:

  • Numerous error codes that may appear on the meter and they need to know what to do about each of them.
  • How to change the battery and what kind of battery to buy
  • Knowing if they are getting bad or inaccurate measurements and what to do about them.
  • Knowing how to use the self-test feature on some units

The problem of getting bad measurements is an extremely difficult issue because they may be due to:

  • The numerous ways you can use the lancing device, test strips, or glucose meter improperly
  • Expired test strips
  • Test strips that have been left out of the vial too long or left in a hot environment like a car
  • Personal environment issues like recent food consumption, various medical treatments that have an adverse affect on glucose levels, recent exercise, recent injection of insulin, etc.
  • And more...

PLANNED FUTURE FEATURES

  • graphs that show blood glucose levels over time delivered via E-mail
  • the ability to describe food eaten during the day or night and have the system track them
  • the ability describe your mood and energy levels during the day or night
  • you will be able to take pictures of your meals with a smart phone for future analysis or reporting
  • be able to forward available reports to your doctor via E-mail
  • a natural language based query system to help you create reports that correlate dietary intake over time with mood, energy levels, and glucose measurements.

EXTRAORDINARY BENEFITS OF A CHAT-BOT BASED SYSTEM

  • The system will grow and improve over time via its interactions with users.
  • Improvements made from those interactions will quickly be shared during subsequent sessions with existing users and with all new users as ongoing improvements are made to the chat-bot
  • The system never becomes impatient, tired, rude, or unavailable due to fatigue, boredom, or emotional problems. Barring infrequent system failures, the app will always be available to any user, day or night.
