Inspiration
Blood emergencies often depend on finding a suitable donor quickly, but requests can be scattered across WhatsApp groups, social media, and personal networks. This makes it difficult to reach the right donor at the right time.
The idea behind Blood Nearby came from seeing how people in emergency situations depend on forwarding messages and manually asking around for blood. We wanted to build a more structured way to connect people who need blood with suitable nearby donors.
What We Built
Blood Nearby is a real-time emergency blood-matching platform that connects people who need blood with suitable donors.
The platform includes:
- 🩸 Real-time donor matching based on blood group and location
- 🤖 AI-powered priority matching using factors such as urgency, availability, and donor information
- 📍 Location-based donor discovery
- 🔔 Emergency alerts for eligible nearby donors
- 🏥 Hospital and NGO verification for blood requests
- 📊 Request management for organizations
- 🌐 Web-based access for users, donors, hospitals, and NGOs
Our goal is to reduce the time spent manually searching for donors and make emergency blood requests more organized and reliable.
How We Built It
We developed the project as a web-based platform using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AI integration, with a focus on creating a simple interface that can be used during stressful emergency situations.
The system is designed around a simple flow:
Need → Match → Alert → Donor Response → Help
We also designed separate workflows for donors and organizations so that hospitals and NGOs can manage and verify emergency requests.
What We Learned
While building Blood Nearby, we learned that solving a real-world problem is not only about adding more features. The system needs to be simple, fast, and understandable because users may be using it during an emergency.
We also learned how to combine different parts of a web application—user workflows, location-based matching, notifications, verification, and AI-assisted prioritization—into one platform.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was designing a matching system that goes beyond simply finding the same blood group.
A useful match also needs to consider factors such as:
- Blood group compatibility
- Donor availability
- Distance
- Urgency of the request
- Donor eligibility and previous donation information
Another challenge was designing the platform so that hospitals and NGOs can provide verified requests while keeping the experience simple for donors.
What's Next
We want to continue improving Blood Nearby by strengthening the donor-matching logic, expanding hospital and NGO workflows, improving verification, and making the platform more scalable across different cities.
Our vision is simple:
When someone needs blood urgently, finding a suitable donor should not depend on how many people they know or how many groups they can message.
