This is a MMO top down shooter that uses the SpaceTimeDB to link a lot of players into a ww2 game. taking place on the western front, you have to capture objectives to advance your sides victory.
Inspiration: We both have a love for the ww2 era and wanted to create a MMO with a massive front that mirrored Europe in the 1940's. seeing as spacetimedb could accommodate that amount of people and space we though that it would be a perfect fit for our game.
What it does: it is a MMO where you capture objectives and push back you opponents to seize victory. Across the battlefield there are capture points to push you power and get closer to winning.
How we built it: we used spacetimedb's integration with unity to create a client server multiplayer game. we used C# to program in all of the game mechanics. we used unity as the client and spacetimedb as the server.
Challenges we ran into: there was a very steep learning curve we ran into learning how to not only program in the spacetime server, we also were new to multiplayer online games. Both of which hindered our progress to get to some of the intended features we wanted to make.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: We are very proud to have made the game because there was a time were we though it wouldn't even be in a functional state. We are proud that we not only finished but were able to learn spacetimedb and how we could use it to make a massive game like this.
What we learned: we learned how to use spacetimedb, we also learned how to multiplayer online games work and the difficulties that go into making those types of games.
What's next for Blood and Iron: We wanted to expand our smaller map into an historically accurate Europe in the 1940's and have different types of capture points that would influence a large-scale war between the Axis and the Allies. We wanted to also expand to different theaters with different types of weapons and terrains for people to fight their way through. Lastly, we wanted to add vehicles like tanks, planes, and artillery to help sway the battle in your favor.
