Inspiration
We were inspired by the "Nigerian Prince" theme. We know that phishing is a big problem. We wanted to create a solution that is community driven and is always updated on the latest scam attacks. Therefore we thought of a program "BlockOFF" which user are able to help each other by reporting attacks. That way our web extension/app can stay updated in real time and hopefully prevent others from being attacked. Sometimes when you fall for a "Nigerian Prince" it feels like there's nothing you can do. We provide something to do, so others feel safe.
What it does
BlockOFF combines a website, web extension and app to make sure all your devices are safe when browsning the internet. User can report when they get attacked by scammers. We also check to see if the report is legit by looking at the age of a website + links + seeing if it's on our whitelist. Sites/Phones/Emails reported then show up when the user tries to interact with them. Our system is a warning that makes the user think twice. Our system doesn't stop the user, it just makes the user think twice before clicking on a link. We reward "Hunter" profiles that report scam sites. That way we can make a trusted system where user are rewarded for helping keep the internet safe.
How we built it
We built it using our own knowledge of coding and with the help of ai tools. We have created a 3 way system that all talks with our database. In that way we can update alle 3 systems in real time and make sure data is shared across the platforms. In the app development we used loveable ai for frontend. This makes for a more updated a faster responsive system.
Challenges we ran into
We have had challenges with making all our platforms work together and are still working on solving it. We also tried to think of ways our system could be abused and we are not quite finished with all the worst case scenarios.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we have managed to built a system that shows our idea. It might not work optimally right now, but it gives us a way to show how BlockOFF would work if given more time to be built. We are very proud of our database, since we (Sean the GOAT) built it from scrap and it's able to talk to our other systems.
What we learned
We learned that backend development is hard and stitching everything together in the end is quite hard. We also learned that the idea is more important than making the solution run perfectly. We can proudly say our idea is shining through in our work, even though we still have some bugs to fix.
What's next for BlockOFF
Next for BlockOFF is to make it run smoothly and create a community that can help us make the internet a safer place to browse.
