Inspiration
We were looking for a solution to help blind people become even more independent giving new IoT technologies that are emerging.
What it does
The app locates areas or rooms with the help of Firefly beacons and also locates the position of the person and helps them navigate through the area or room by guiding them with sound. It also shows the current situation eg. temperature, humidity at the location of the firefly sensor.
How we built it
We built an Android application and measured the signal strength of the BLE beacons and configure it all so that it guides the person around using sound.
Challenges we ran into
Holding sensor data, reading BLE characteristics. Android Studio as a whole is the biggest challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Actually making a working demo, which has quite a few functionalities. Connecting hardware to get something real and useful.
What we learned
We learned a lot of Java and Android development but also working with BLE beacons. We also learned to work on a tight schedule.
What's next for BlindLight
We might continue to develop further if the public finds it interesting. We would also like to expand it to public places and make this app also useful in urban environment and places that could benefit from such technology eg. museums, hospitals...
