Inspiration
We wanted to create a retro-style 2D game that combines fast-paced arcade shooting with simple yet addictive gameplay. The inspiration came from classic pixel-based shooters, where every move and shot counts.
What it does
Blastic_2D is a lightweight 2D blast-shooter game where players navigate and shoot obstacles or enemies while surviving as long as possible. The game focuses on reflexes, positioning, and quick decision-making to score higher with each round.
How we built it
Designed core mechanics using Java (or your chosen game engine/framework, e.g., Unity/Pygame). Implemented a simple sprite-based movement and shooting system. Created physics for collisions and enemy spawning with incremental difficulty. Added sound effects and UI elements for an immersive arcade feel. Version-controlled using GitHub for collaboration and project management.
Challenges we ran into
Calibrating movement speed and shooting mechanics to feel smooth and responsive. Designing enemy AI and spawn mechanics without overwhelming the player too quickly. Optimizing graphics and collision detection for better performance. Managing time constraints while balancing gameplay features and visuals.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building a fully functional 2D blasting game from scratch. Implementing polished mechanics like responsive controls, smooth animations, and score tracking. Designing engaging levels that get progressively harder. Showcasing the project as our first step into game development.
What we learned
Game loop programming and handling frame updates. The importance of balance between difficulty and player enjoyment. Physics handling for collision detection in 2D environments. Effective use of version control for collaborative coding.
What's next for blastic_2D
Adding power-ups and special abilities to increase gameplay depth. Implementing multiplayer functionality for competitive play. Enhancing graphics with better sprites and particle effects. Publishing as a lightweight desktop/mobile game for wider access.
