Blast Zero: A Space-Themed Fast-Paced Word Game

What Inspired Us

Blast Zero was born from our shared passion for word games and fast-paced challenges. As a team of four, we envisioned a game that combined the thrill of quick thinking with the immersive environment of outer space. Our collective goal was to design a game that not only tested players’ mental agility but also transported them to an exciting and engaging cosmic setting.

What We Learned

The project was a rich learning experience for all of us, both individually and as a team. Key lessons included:

  • Blender and Texturing: We tackled the intricacies of texture naming and how they impacted the final appearance of assets, discovering best practices through trial and error.
  • Collaborative Development: Effective communication and task delegation were essential in synchronizing our efforts and meeting deadlines.
  • Scripting Techniques: Developing the game manager required a deep dive into scripting principles, debugging, and modular design.
  • Asset Management: Overcoming repeated failures in asset uploads taught us the importance of optimization and thorough testing.
  • Teamwork: Working as a team strengthened our problem-solving abilities and helped us grow through shared knowledge and experiences.

How We Built the Project

The development of Blast Zero was a collaborative effort, where each member contributed their unique skills to bring the vision to life:

  1. Concept Design: As a team, we brainstormed the mechanics, aesthetics, and gameplay loop, aligning our vision for the project.
  2. Asset Creation: Using Blender, we collaborated on creating space-themed models and objects while refining their textures and visual appeal.
  3. Implementation: Team members took turns scripting, testing, and optimizing different components of the game. This included the word generation logic, scoring system, and interactive player interface.
  4. Iterative Testing: Multiple trial-and-error sessions were conducted to identify and resolve gameplay issues, ensuring a polished final product.
  5. Final Touches: We worked together to optimize the game’s performance in Horizon Worlds and finalize its design for player enjoyment.

Challenges We Faced

The journey was not without its challenges, many of which required teamwork and perseverance to overcome:

  • Blender Troubles: Properly naming and managing textures proved to be a time-intensive task, leading to some early setbacks.
  • Asset Upload Failures: Several “epic fails” during the upload process in Horizon Worlds frustrated us but ultimately pushed us to improve our workflows.
  • Scripting Complexities: Developing the game manager required extensive trial and error, as we adjusted and fine-tuned the mechanics.
  • Coordinating Tasks: Balancing contributions among team members while ensuring consistency and quality was a constant effort.

Conclusion

Blast Zero is more than just a game; it’s the result of creativity, collaboration, and determination. Each team member’s contributions played a vital role in overcoming obstacles and crafting a unique, fast-paced word game that we’re proud to share. This project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a team unites around a shared vision and refuses to give up in the face of challenges.
