Inspiration

Uni life is diverse and most experience vastly different lives. Most of us, no matter how much we have planned and resolved, will almost always end up being more busy than expected or joining events we never thought we would. UNI-verse attempts to emulate the experience, although much simplified.

What it does

Gamifies uni life and choosing modules and a social life. Added peer pressure for realism. Retro-themed for more nostalgia and bringing back the simple feel of gaming in the past.

How we built it

Built on React.js and Next.js, the game runs purely on the web without having to install or download any application. This also allows for more cross-platform enjoyment. The gamification is also done purely in CSS.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, the idea benched more on NUS modules and modreg, with the added complexity of 3D rendering with the help of three.js. Almost 75% of the way through and we faced a hard block in terms of the usability of the libraries and the extent to which we can push them to emulate a game. A hard pivot with around 6 hours left was not our best decision but not our worst either, considering we were on the brink of failure had we continued.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Surviving off adrenaline, the many laughs we had and, of course, the ability to pull together a project late into the game.

What we learned

Sleep is for the weak and we are weak

What's next for Blanner

  1. Links directly to NUSmods for tighter integration between modules and actual days and durations.
  2. More audio options and difficulty settings
  3. Scoring system and stats for nerds
