Who are we

We are a group of first-year students at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Inspiration

The idea was to make a video game to pay homage to Blahaj, a beloved character, and icon of the Swedish-based furniture retailer. The game is intended to be small, fun and creative and deliver on a memorable gaming experience while being made in a mere 24 hours.

What it does

Blahaj Swing features a series of levels with unique assets and animation, with an emphasis on a grappling mechanic allowing you to propel your character between platforms. How we built it

We built this project using Godot, a free and open-source game engine. It was developed using the dynamically typed scripting language GDScript, and the art and game assets using Aseprite and Krita.

Challenges and Accomplishements

Our team had zero experience working with Godot, let alone any game engine so this was a learning experience for all of us. We had to learn how to create, import assets and write scripts, and how to create levels and animations using our own tools. Applying our theoretical programming knowledge to a video game certainly was a challenge, but it's something we're proud of as a team.

What we learned

This was a great opportunity for us as our first venture into game development and taught us many of the skills and techniques that would make a fun and innovative user experience.

What's next for Blahaj Swing

Creating this game under such heavy constraints meant we had to make a lot of design and mechanic changes we wouldn't normally have made. If we came back to this project in the future, we're open to refining and improving the game mechanics and art.

  • [ ] Improve the sprites, animation, and tilemap textures to expand the game's unique art direction
