💡 Inspiration In Morocco, mental health struggles and addiction are hidden behind a massive wall of social stigma and shame. Imagine a 26-year-old struggling with substance abuse or severe anxiety. At 3:00 AM, when a violent craving or panic attack hits, they are completely alone. They can't wake their family due to fear of being disowned, and private clinics are far too expensive.
We realized that while there are many "wellness" apps, there are almost no culturally adapted, medically grounded emergency tools for youth in developing countries. We wanted to build a "digital safety net" that fits right in their pocket—100% anonymous, entirely judgment-free, and instantly accessible.
⚙️ What it does Bla Dwa is a Digital Therapeutics (DTx) mobile platform designed to help users manage severe anxiety, insomnia, and addiction recovery. It acts as an emergency psychological refuge through three main pillars:
The SOS Button (Crisis Intervention): When a craving or panic attack strikes, the app launches instant, clinically validated grounding techniques (like 4-7-8 breathing or 5-4-3-2-1 sensory protocols) to de-escalate the crisis in real-time.
Empathic AI Companion: A 24/7 conversational chatbot trained strictly on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) manuals to defuse intrusive thoughts without judgment.
Clinical Tracking & Escalation Protocol: We don't just guess how the user feels; we measure it using globally recognized psychometric tests (GAD-7 for anxiety, PHQ-9 for depression, ISI for insomnia). If the algorithm detects a critical risk score, it automatically triggers an Escalation Protocol, redirecting the user to professional medical help or emergency hotlines.
🛠️ How we built it We approached this as a robust MedTech solution rather than a simple mood tracker:
Frontend & UI: We prioritized a "Dark Mode/Comfy" aesthetic to soothe users during late-night crises. The interface was rapidly prototyped and built using Next.js and Tailwind CSS.
Backend Architecture: To ensure highly secure, scalable, and modular data handling, we utilized a combination of Node.js and Spring Boot microservices.
AI Integration: To prevent dangerous "AI hallucinations" (giving wrong medical advice), we implemented a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture. Our AI model accesses a private, curated database of validated medical protocols before generating any response.
⚠️ Challenges we ran into The "Cold Start" Data Problem: Finding localized behavioral datasets for addiction in North Africa is nearly impossible. We solved this by using open-source international datasets (like MIMIC-III) for our MVP, with the long-term goal of Bla Dwa becoming the first anonymous data-collection engine for mental health in the region.
Medical Liability: We had to strictly define the line between an "accompaniment tool" and a "diagnostic tool" to ensure user safety and legal compliance, which led to the creation of our hard-coded Escalation Protocol.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of We are incredibly proud to have built an app that actively breaks cultural taboos. By enforcing absolute anonymity (no names, no IDs required) and focusing on a highly empathetic user experience, we've created a safe space for marginalized youth who previously had nowhere to turn.
📚 What we learned We learned how to bridge the gap between complex software architecture and raw human empathy. Working with RAG models taught us how to restrict generative AI to behave responsibly within a strict medical framework.
🚀 What's next for Bla Dwa Our roadmap is focused on launching our B2B SaaS Dashboard. While the app remains Freemium for users, the dashboard will be licensed to psychiatrists and addiction clinics. This will allow doctors to remotely monitor their patients' craving scores and sleep patterns between physical consultations, preventing relapses before they happen. We are also preparing to secure institutional funding to launch our first Beta cohort!
