Inspiration: Ohio being one of the few states in the U.S. to not offer a technology dedicated to informing the public on COVID-19. The Director of the Department of Health attributed it to excluding vulnerable populations less likely to own a smartphone, yet didn't propose or create any alternatives.
What it does: Increase confidence in the security of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for communities of color who have been historically abused by the American public health system. Not only that, but it would ideally provide COVID-19 racial data based on county and inform on general health disparities that affect POC like diabetes, high infant mortality rates and blood clotting.
How we built it: Developed UI prototype in AdobeXD.
Challenges we ran into: We initially intended to code and deploy a mobile app through React Native but ran into many dependency issues along the way and decided that submitting a UI prototype is better than submitting nothing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Understanding not to drag yourself down when faced with roadblocks and tapering expectations for what can be accomplished in a short amount of time. Even the most experienced developers run into issues like dependencies or lack of legible documentation.
What we learned: It's good to be idealistic in order to create a better future, but you need to be realistic with how much you can accomplish within a day and to utilize what you learned as momentum for the next.
What's next for Black Wings Health: It would be amazing to discuss the idea with Black Wings Hacks and Pinterest see if they would like to collaborate on the project and bring it into fruition as the vaccine becomes more publicly available.
