Inspiration

Pregnancy-related mortality rates among Black women are over three higher when compared to the rate for White women. The disparities in maternal and infant health are a manifestation of deeper social and economic injustices, which stem from systemic racism and discrimination. The Black Unified Mothers Program (BUMP) is a community-focused initiative that aims to empower and support Black pregnant mothers. The program provides resources, education, and support to help Black mothers advocate for themselves and navigate the challenges they may face during pregnancy. BUMP also serves as a platform for Black mothers to connect with one another and build a supportive network. The goal of the program is to uplift and strengthen the Black community by empowering and supporting Black mothers.

What it does

A website that provides links to resources, education, and support to help Black mothers advocate for themselves and navigate the challenges they may face during pregnancy.

How we built it

We built it using html, css, and figma

Challenges we ran into

When building our website using HTML and CSS, there were several challenges that we faced: 1) Understanding HTML and CSS syntax: It took us time to get familiar with the code and how it works. 2) Creating a responsive design: It was challenging to create a responsive design for the first time. 3) Debugging: Since we are beginners debugging code was time-consuming and difficult 4) Learning new concepts: It was overwhelming to learn all these new things at once.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are thrilled to present a website that highlights the significance of education for Black mothers during pregnancy and provides them with valuable resources to empower themselves and advocate for their needs during this challenging time.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the disparities in maternal health and the systemic racism and discrimination that fuels it. We learned how to build a website using html, css, figma for the first time.

What's next for Black.Unified.Mothers.Program

The goal of the program is to uplift and strengthen the Black community by empowering and supporting Black mothers. Our focus is on deepening its impact by offering more comprehensive support to Black mothers, such as links to financial assistance, housing support, or mental health services. BUMP also aims in the future to become a strong advocate for Black mothers and work to raise awareness about the challenges they face and push for policy changes that will benefit them. We aim to do this by creating social accounts.Lastly, BUMP aims to continue building a strong and supportive community of Black mothers through online forums, and other initiatives that bring mothers together. We hope to create an online forum and link it to our website.
