Inspiration

Bizniz Quest draws inspiration from The Office’s corporate humor, the eerie workplace vibes of Severance, and the corpo-speak of LinkedIn. Wrapped in warm, nostalgic office tones like brown, beige, and manila folders, the office-core aesthetic makes hard tasks feel approachable through gamification. With asks created in mere seconds, and real-world results potentially just as fast, the tagline sums it up best: “Make business fun again!”

What it does

You will be guided through a networking method to form an ask. Select the role you're looking for in the area that you're looking for, then optionally attach a URL or even more context. Each quest post is automatically assigned post flair so colleagues can browse through the subreddit easier (this was an early user's feature request!), and it also encourages crossposting to relevant subreddits. Besides the natural life wins, players can also report their success stories to earn real-world swag like stickers or shirts.

How I built it

I’m just a girl, with no formal engineering background (only UX Design), so I used Cursor (which worked better than Windsurf thanks to its integrated Devvit MCP server) along with Reddit’s Devvit system and API methods like flairID and createPost. I designed the guided form flow with responsive layouts while focusing on UGC with searchability, browsability, and sharability across Reddit in mind. For branding, I created office-core Snoo fanart mascots and board room style copywriting with the help of ChatGPT. I created supporting slide and GIF assets in Canva, demo video in iMovie, and a bonus landing page in Lovable with domain hosting on Vercel. A speaking sound in my demo video was made in Elevenlabs, otherwise that was all me talking. Music in my demo video is free CC0 by Kevin MacLeod, but I paid him $15 anyway, and he said "Thanks". I thought that was funny.

Challenges I ran into

Learning Devvit as a non-engineer was a steep challenge. I made a huge mistake. Everything was new, and I kept mixing up what was part of Blocks, versus the different web versions. I studied the example games mentioned built on Blocks, reset my environments four times, and when Blocks worked, I went with it... only to realize to my horror when I returned to DevPost to submit my entry, that it wasn’t the actual brief.

To make up for it, I attempted to convert this Blocks app to WebView (update: half-failed attempt at conversion + pixel vibe but non-post functional, time spent: 1.5 hours, about 4 hours before deadline), and then I attempted a companion app in the Bizniz Quest world on WebView called Bizniz Quest Reflect to answer deep questions, reflecting on how you really feel about your career journey, like a diary (update: here is as far as I got, time: 2 hours spent, right up until deadline. Web seems more challenging, perhaps because of less constraints. Admins are set as allowed in these test environments and I really hope my intent comes through clearly, that I wanted to follow the rules! 😭

Beyond that, other challenges included keeping the flow simple, getting mobile pop-ups to behave, encouraging adoption without looking spammy, and designing flexible categories without overwhelming the filing cabinet!

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Early success stories of strangers connecting through the system on the first day - I may have gotten a gig with u/Optimal-Republic5211, and then u/Brief-Lemon-4614 found a beta tester and made a $20 sale!
  • Improved mobile responsiveness, and tackled tricky bugs with mobile form fields.
  • Published an entire mini-game, subreddit, and brand inside of Reddit as a newcomer to engineering!

What I learned

Never trust the office printer when it says “1 page remaining.”

What’s next for Bizniz Quest

  • Produce the swag and start mailing it out as rewards for top success stories.
  • Tried a WebView conversion, but considered it a fail, and moved onto Bizniz Quest Reflect, a performance review companion app with questions to answer that encourage users to reflect on their careers. Question topics will be gathered from communities like r/jobs, r/careerguidance, r/entrepreneur, (and as an Aussie, I love r/auscorp)!
  • Beyond Bizniz Quest, my company Hackeroos will also be hosting an unofficial Hackeroos Spooky Reddit Game Jam running October 8th–28th, now that I’ve used this hackathon to learn the system.

Please let me know how we can support each other, and overall, thank you for this experience.
