Inspiration:
We were inspired by seeing how complicated it is to open a small business in downtown Chicago. Many people have great ideas, but they get stuck because they don’t know where to start. The process of finding permits, checking zoning rules, and understanding if a location is profitable can be very overwhelming. We wanted to build something that makes this journey more structured and less stressful, especially for first-time entrepreneurs.
What it does:
Bizlo is a smart web platform that helps people plan and analyze their small business idea in Chicago’s Loop area. It asks users structured questions about their business type, budget, location, and target customers. Based on their answers, it provides the exact legal permits and compliance requirements needed — with direct links to the correct government application pages. Beyond legal guidance, it also analyzes the business idea’s viability. It checks factors like rent, competition, target audience presence, proximity to suppliers, and safety indicators. It even suggests better alternative locations if the user’s chosen location is not optimal.
How we built it :
We built Bizlo using a structured questionnaire system combined with a rule-based permit engine. The backend maps user inputs (like restaurant + alcohol + outdoor seating) to the exact licenses required. We also created a location analysis model that estimates revenue potential using simple predictive logic and compares it with rent and other expenses. The system generates a personalized dashboard and report where users can view required permits, cost estimates, timelines, and location comparisons in one place. We focused on making the experience simple and clear rather than overwhelming.
Challenges we ran into:
One of the biggest challenges was organizing government information. Many official websites are complex and nested, so finding exact permit pages required careful structuring. Another challenge was balancing simplicity with accuracy — we wanted to keep the platform easy to use while still giving meaningful and realistic analysis. Second challenge was incorporating all the factors into the idea that could affect the buisness success and what matric we will use for them .
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We’re also proud of coming up with an idea that can truly support many dedicated people who have great business ideas but struggle because they don’t have access to the right tools. Without proper guidance, it takes a lot of time and effort to figure out all the required legal compliances and to research whether their business idea is actually viable in their chosen location, especially with a limited budget. Through Bizlo, we are trying to reduce that gap and make the process clearer, faster, and more structured for aspiring entrepreneurs. We’re especially proud of building the deep-link permit engine that sends users directly to the exact government application page they need, instead of making them navigate through a generic landing page.
What we learned:
We learned that many aspiring entrepreneurs don’t lack ideas — they lack structured guidance. We also realized how important it is to design tools that reduce confusion instead of adding more information overload. Working on Bizlo helped us understand real-world challenges in business planning, compliance systems, and user experience design.
What's next for Bizlo:
Next, we want to expand Bizlo beyond the Loop area to cover more neighborhoods across Chicago. Our goal is to make this tool useful for a wider range of aspiring entrepreneurs, not just those focusing on downtown. We also plan to improve our financial projection model by incorporating more refined assumptions and, eventually, real-time data sources to make the analysis even more practical and reliable. We’re also excited about adding features like break-even analysis, loan availability insights, and funding readiness checks. Many people have strong business ideas but struggle to understand whether they are financially prepared to take the next step. We want Bizlo to guide them through that process in a structured and supportive way. Another idea we’re passionate about is creating a space where existing small and medium successful businesses can share their stories and experiences on the platform. We believe learning from real entrepreneurs can inspire and guide people who are just starting out. Along with that, we are exploring ways to build a system that can help match users with funding opportunities and resources to better manage their finances. In the long term, we hope Bizlo becomes a trusted and reliable platform that genuinely helps small business owners move confidently from idea to execution. As students who are deeply interested in problem-solving, we want to keep refining and improving Bizlo so it can make a real difference in people’s entrepreneurial journeys.
