How can technology help women better access the resources of industry networks to accelerate women entrepreneurs and leaders? Encourages EQUITY and ALLYSHIP
Problem Statement
Develop a platform that connects small businesses with potential investors, provides transparent and fair repayment terms and promotes economic growth for all.
How is our project inspiring?
The skills of handicrafts, horticulture, and catering are widely prevalent among women in rural areas. Over time, these skills have expanded into viable business opportunities, with increasing demand. However, traditional banks do not provide funding for these businesses, while loan sharks charge extremely high-interest rates. Even big investment companies are reluctant to trust them. Nevertheless, there is hope through the development of a new app that provides a platform for small businesses to pitch for investments. This app enables individuals who wish to support these small businesses to do so by making investments that help both parties achieve their goals. This initiative is inspiring because it empowers women in rural areas to develop their skills and turn them into successful business ventures while also providing a means for investors to support local communities and make a positive impact.
What impact will it make?
The impact of this app can be significant and far-reaching. Firstly, it provides an opportunity for small businesses, particularly those led by women in rural areas, to access funding that they might not have been able to obtain otherwise. This can help them to grow and expand their businesses, create jobs, and contribute to the local economy. Secondly, the app can also help to address the issue of loan sharks charging exorbitant interest rates, which can lead to debt traps for small business owners. By providing a legitimate platform for investment, the app can help to reduce the reliance on these predatory lenders and provide a safer and more sustainable funding option. Finally, the app can also have a positive social impact by promoting the empowerment of women in rural areas. By enabling them to build successful businesses and become financially independent, the app can help to break down gender barriers and empower women to take control of their lives and contribute to their communities. Overall, the app has the potential to make a significant difference in the lives of small business owners, investors, and local communities, and promote economic and social development in rural areas.
Inspiration
We were inspired to create this app by the desire to empower women entrepreneurs with community-backed funding, providing them with the resources and support they need to build successful businesses. We believe that investing in women-owned businesses can help promote gender equality, create more opportunities for women, and drive economic growth and innovation. Our goal is to create a platform that not only helps women entrepreneurs access the funding they need, but also provides a community of support and mentorship to help them succeed.
What it does
The overall functionality of the app is to provide a platform for women entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas and receive community-backed funding from interested investors. The app will feature a range of tools and resources to help entrepreneurs create compelling business pitches, connect with potential investors, and manage their investments and repayments. Investors will be able to browse and invest in a range of businesses, track their investments, and receive regular updates on their investments' progress. The app will also provide a community of support and mentorship to help entrepreneurs succeed, including networking events, educational resources, and mentor matching. Overall, the app will provide a comprehensive platform for women entrepreneurs to access the funding, resources, and support they need to build successful businesses.
How could this project be rolled out into the real world? What considerations have been given?
Rolling out the crowdfunding platform into the real world would involve a number of considerations, such as:
- Developing a launch strategy: A launch strategy should be developed to introduce the platform to potential investors and borrowers. This strategy should include identifying target markets, creating marketing materials, and leveraging existing networks to promote the platform.
- Partnering with stakeholders: Partnering with relevant stakeholders such as small business organizations, women's groups, and investor networks could help to raise awareness of the platform and provide access to a wider pool of potential investors and borrowers.
- Ensuring regulatory compliance: The platform should be designed in compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks, such as securities laws, crowdfunding regulations, and consumer protection laws. It may be necessary to seek legal advice to ensure that the platform is compliant in all relevant jurisdictions.
- Establishing trust and transparency: Trust and transparency are critical to the success of the platform. The platform should clearly communicate the repayment terms, investment risks, and other relevant information to investors and borrowers. It may also be necessary to provide mechanisms for dispute resolution and to implement user reviews to help establish trust.
- Developing robust technology infrastructure: The technology infrastructure of the platform should be robust and scalable to handle the volume of users and transactions. This may involve investing in cloud-based hosting, security protocols, and data management systems.
- Managing risk: There are inherent risks associated with investing in small businesses. The platform should have systems in place to manage these risks, such as conducting due diligence on potential borrowers and providing investors with diversification options.
- Providing customer support: Providing timely and effective customer support is essential to ensuring that the platform operates smoothly and that users have a positive experience. The platform should have a customer support team that can respond to inquiries and resolve issues in a timely manner. Overall, rolling out the crowdfunding platform into the real world would require careful planning and execution. Consideration should be given to the needs of both investors and borrowers, regulatory compliance, technology infrastructure, risk management, and customer support.
How we built it
We have designed the prototype using Figma. A mobile application can be developed using native app development tools like Xcode for iOS and Android Studio for Android. Alternatively, cross-platform frameworks like React Native or Flutter can be used to build a single codebase that can be deployed on both iOS and Android devices.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges we faced while designing the app was ensuring that our calculations and financial metrics were tailored to the needs of small women entrepreneurs. We recognized that many entrepreneurs may not have a deep understanding of financial ratios or business statistics, and we wanted to create an app that could easily guide them through the process of pitching their business and calculating their repayment amounts. Despite these challenges, we remained committed to creating a platform that was focused on empowering small women entrepreneurs with the resources and support they need to succeed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
There are several accomplishments that we can be proud of with this app. Firstly, we can be proud of creating a platform that provides community-backed funding to small women entrepreneurs, who often face significant challenges in accessing traditional funding sources. By connecting entrepreneurs with interested investors and providing a range of tools and resources to support their business growth, we believe that our app has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of women entrepreneurs and their communities. Secondly, we can be proud of creating a platform that promotes gender equality and empowers women to achieve their full potential. By investing in women-owned businesses, we can help to level the playing field and create more opportunities for women in business. We believe that this can have a ripple effect, creating more role models and inspiring more women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. Finally, we can be proud of creating a platform that fosters a community of support and mentorship for women entrepreneurs. By connecting entrepreneurs with mentors, advisors, and peers who can provide guidance, feedback, and support, we believe that our app can help entrepreneurs overcome the challenges and obstacles they face and build successful, sustainable businesses. Overall, we believe that our app has the potential to make a meaningful impact on the lives of women entrepreneurs and their communities, and we are proud to have played a role in creating it.
What we learned
As students participating in a hackathon, we have learned several important lessons from designing this app. Firstly, we have learned the importance of being user-centric in our approach to product design. By putting ourselves in the shoes of small women entrepreneurs and understanding their needs and challenges, we were able to create a platform that truly meets their needs and empowers them to succeed. Secondly, we have learned the value of collaboration and teamwork in creating a successful product. Working together as a team, we were able to leverage each other's strengths and expertise to create a product that was both innovative and effective. Finally, we have learned the importance of persistence and resilience in the face of challenges and setbacks. While we faced a number of technical and design challenges along the way, we remained committed to our goal of creating an app that could make a real difference in the lives of small women entrepreneurs. Through perseverance and hard work, we were able to overcome these challenges and create a product that we are proud of. Overall, participating in this hackathon has been a valuable learning experience for us as students, helping us to develop our skills in product design, teamwork, and problem-solving. We believe that the lessons we have learned from this experience will serve us well in our future endeavors, both as students and as professionals in our respective fields.
