Our inspiration began with a simple observation: food insecurity being an issue especially in marginalized communities. We were inspired by the idea that small, sustainable changes in food habits can lead to significant improvements in food security. A study found that adopting sustainable food practices can reduce household food costs by up to 30%. (Source: University of British Columbia). We wanted to create a tool that not only provides ingredients to recipes but also empowers users to make better food choices while minimizing waste.
Throughout this project, we discovered how education plays a crucial role in helping individuals make informed decisions about their food. Additionally, we gained hands-on experience in developing a chatbot and creating a user-friendly web interface, which developed our understanding of web development and user interaction.
To bring our idea to life, we utilized a tech stack that includes Python with Flask for the backend, allowing us to handle user interactions efficiently. For the chatbot functionality, we integrated natural language processing (NLP) libraries that enable our bot to understand user queries and provide relevant responses. The front end was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create an interactive and visually appealing user experience.
One of the main challenges we encountered was making sure that the chatbot could provide accurate and helpful information. We spent significant time refining the algorithms to enhance its understanding of user inputs. Additionally, designing an engaging and intuitive user interface required multiple iterations and feedback sessions. We also faced time constraints during the hackathon, which pushed us to prioritize features.
Overall, this project was an excellent learning experience that strengthened our commitment to addressing food insecurity through innovative technology. We are excited about the potential impact of BiteWISE in helping individuals make sustainable food choices.
