Inspiration

We loved the classic Minesweeper and wanted to put our own fun spin on it. We were inspired by how simple Minesweeper’s rules are while still requiring strategy, logic, and deduction. We wanted to turn that puzzle-solving experience into a more interactive adventure.

What it does

Bitsweeper combines classic Minesweeper mechanics with exploration and real-time combat. Players control a cat navigating a mine-filled world, using numbers, probability, and deduction to uncover safe tiles and avoid danger.

How we built it

We built Bitsweeper entirely in Godot. We created our own visual assets using Aseprite and composed our own music using FL Studio. This allowed us to create a cohesive art style, atmosphere, and soundscape specifically for the game.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was time management and scope creep. We had many ideas we wanted to include, which made it difficult to decide what could realistically be completed during the hackathon. We had to prioritize our core gameplay and make sure we had a polished, playable experience by the deadline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're especially proud of the depth of our game's visual and music design. We created our own art and music rather than relying entirely on existing assets, which helped give Bitsweeper its own personality. We're also proud of how engaging the gameplay feels and how we transformed a classic puzzle into something interactive and fun.

What we learned

We learned the importance of scoping a project realistically and prioritizing core features during a limited development period. We also gained experience with game development in Godot, creating custom assets and music, and combining puzzle mechanics with combat and exploration.

What's next for Bitsweeper

Next, we would like to implement our shop system fully. We already created the UI and originally planned to include it in the final game, but ran out of time. The shop would allow players to spend rewards on upgrades and items, adding another layer of strategy and progression to the game.
