Inspiration
For years, Android audiophiles have faced a frustrating trade-off: use legacy players with great sound engines trapped inside clunky, 2012-era interfaces, or use modern streaming apps that degrade audio through Android's system mixer.
We built Bitperfect Player to prove you don't have to compromise:
- Zero OS interference: A ground-up Rust audio engine with proprietary UAC1/UAC2 USB drivers that bypass Android AudioFlinger entirely.
- Studio-grade acoustics: Native upsampling, tube simulation, convolution, and an extensible plugin system.
- Modern polish: A silky-smooth 60/120 FPS interface that looks, moves, and feels like a tier-one consumer app.
- AI Features: Sophisticated fully local true AI models for audio enhancement and voice/instruments isolation AI Karaoke model that runs locally on NPU and CPU Lite models to run directly on any phone through CPU. Unique technology - available only in bitperfect player. AI Mix model creating unique mixes based on your library, creating almost 200 params for each track by real local AI model - nothing sends on the cloud, nothing disturb your privacy.
What it does
Bitperfect Player gives listeners bitperfect, studio-grade playback by taking direct low-level control of Android audio hardware:
- Bitperfect USB & DAP Output: Custom USB drivers stream uncompressed audio directly to external DACs, with tailored hardware profiles for HiBy, iBasso, and Astell & Kern players.
- Live Signal Path Inspector: Transparent real-time UI showing every step from audio file to DAC pins, confirming whether audio is pristine or processed.
- Pro DSP Suite: Up to 8x upsampling, PCM-to-DSD conversion, parametric EQ, tube amp modeling, crossfeed, and dynamic range track analysis.
- Edge AI Audio Processing: First-of-its-kind, real-time AI audio restoration running on-device via Qualcomm & MediaTek NPUs (reconstructing lossy audio up to 48 kHz), plus an on-device vocal isolator for instant karaoke.
- Connectivity & Cast Hub: Stream out via Chromecast, DLNA/UPnP, ShAirPlay, and MPD, or use the device as an LMS/Roon receiver (through slimproto). Includes 2,000+ internet radio stations and Android Auto.
How we built it
- Rust Audio Core: Low level Rust engine for all audio processing allowed us get pure sound engine with great speed and absolute audio quality.
- Custom Low-Level Drivers: Wrote our own UAC1 and UAC2 USB audio class implementation directly over Android USB host APIs.
- ARM NEON / SIMD: Hand-tuned assembly routines for DSP filters, upsampling, and mixing to minimize battery drain.
- Jetpack Compose + KMP: Clean, declarative UI architecture ready for future iOS porting while holding a strict 60/120 FPS frame budget.
- Community Lab Tested: Developed in a physical lab with dozens of DACs, DAPs, and headphones, refined by testing feedback from hundreds of audiophiles.
Challenges we ran into
- Vendor Fragmentation: Supporting devices back to Android 8 meant hacking around vendor-specific USB bugs and hidden, OS-level sample-rate conversions.
- On-Device NPU Deployment: Training, quantizing, and running custom neural models in real time on mobile NPUs without overheating or thermal throttling - plus engineering an efficient CPU fallback for older devices.
- 120 FPS Under Load: Keeping UI animations locked at high refresh rates while the background thread handles heavy DSP, real-time decoding, and continuous USB audio streaming.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Designed and shipped a native Rust audio engine and custom USB DAC driver stack from scratch.
- Shipped the world’s first real-time neural audio restoration engine running directly on smartphone NPUs.
- Matched or beat the sound fidelity of 10-year industry staples while delivering a modern, beautiful user experience.
What we learned
- To deliver true high-end audio on Android, you must bypass the OS stack entirely: Android should only ever be a UI shell over a bare-metal native core.
- Deploying neural models across fragmented mobile NPUs is challenging, but the battery and latency gains make it well worth the effort.
- Lab measurements only get you halfway - extensive real-world testing with the audiophile community is essential.
What's next for Bitperfect Player
- Native Qobuz Streaming: In discussions for an official integration to bring lossless catalog streaming directly into the player.
- Bitperfect Link: Turn any spare phone or DAP into a headless, bitperfect network streamer controlled remotely from your primary device.
- Community Plugin SDK: Public Plugin SDK allowing developers to add custom music sources and DSP filters providing variety of additional functionality for the main app.
