Inspiration

Looking at our current community and drawing inspiration from the second problem of the 17 SDGs, we've developed an app that aims to connect businesses with leftover food to consumers, aiming to reduce food waste.

What it does

Businesses, near closing time, will publish their leftover food online. Consumers visit the platform, which provides the latest food listings that businesses have posted. Consumers can then visit the stores to take advantage of the deals.

How we built it

Our frontend uses Next.js, and our backend uses Express. This setup allows the backend to handle communication with our Firestore database while reducing the frontend's load time.

Challenges we ran into

Our goal was to develop a mobile application converted from Next.js. However, due to a lack of framework knowledge, we were unable to achieve this. Instead, we opted to build a responsive website that adapts to resolutions from laptops to mobile devices.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. We are proud to have successfully established a smooth connection and workflow between the frontend (Next.js) and backend (Express), as well as between the backend and Firestore. 2 We are proud to be building for a purpose – beyond the technical achievements, we take pride in working on an idea that contributes to reducing food waste and addressing food insecurity in our community. By leveraging technology, we aim to create a sustainable solution that benefits both businesses and consumers while promoting a more responsible food ecosystem.

What we learned

This was our first time learning about the 17 SDGs and the extensive efforts being made to address these global challenges. Sustainability isn’t something that comes naturally; it requires continuous effort and awareness. Through this hackathon, we have gained a deeper appreciation not only for the food we eat but also for the mission and determination behind creating a greener planet.
