Inspiration

Our inspiration was the game mechanics of Flappy Bird and other 2D retro-based games.

What it does

Our game, Project Flop is based on game mechanics from the retro game, Flappy Bird. The game's objective is to control a character that bounces between the horizontal axis across the screen while avoiding spikes at each end.

How we built it

We first custom-built our own physics engine and custom bootloader alongside a custom graphics library. It is programmed in C and Assembly.

Challenges we ran into

The challenges we ran into were abundant. We had issues with assets not loading and graphics simply not loading at all. Another issue we encountered was the in game character had an infinite jump ability that lead to the entire physics engine crashing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that 90% of all the code we used for the project was made in the duration of the hackathon.

What we learned

We learned that not everything we plan to do will not be possible to do and that's fine. For example, we planned to add custom-drawn animated backgrounds but due to challenges with other parts of the game we were unable to implement it.

What's next for Project Flop

Our next goal would be to polish the game by adding proper icons for the various assets in the game such as characters and spikes. We also would like to add abilities to help players avoid the spikes, custom key binds so players can use an optimal input interface as they wish, and a cloud-synced leaderboard to give players an incentive to be the #1 in the world.
