Inspiration

I wanted a simple birthday app to remind me when all my friends and families birthdays are. Everything out there was riddled with ads and an outdated UI. I wanted to create a minimal and modern version that supports widgets and other recent iOS features.

What it does

Imports birthdays from your contacts and presents them in a nice UI. Gives custom reminders and even generates gift ideas based off interests and recipients.

How we built it

The app is 100% SwiftUI. There's a paywall using RevenueCat's paywall templates. The gift recommendation engine is powered by a combination of ChatGPT & Amazon affiliate API.

Challenges we ran into

Amazon's affiliate program isn't very startup friendly. You can't get API access until you've made 3 affiliate sales and you lose access if you don't make a sale every 30 days.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Sticking to 100% SwiftUI was great and the gift recommendation AI integration turned out pretty useful

What we learned

SwiftUI is mostly ready for primetime. I've been hesitant to go all in on it, with most my existing apps being UIKit.

What's next for Birthdays

User feedback! The app launched August 12th so I'm going to take the next few weeks to hear from users to decide on the roadmap and get my first bug fix release out.
