Inspiration

Birds are vital indicators of environmental health, yet many species are rapidly disappearing due to habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. We wanted to create a platform that makes this crisis visible and helps people engage with bird conservation through simple interactive exploration.

What it does

BirdWatch is a web app that visualizes endangered bird species and sanctuaries on an interactive global map. Users can click on locations to learn about threatened species, explore protected areas, and understand the challenges birds face worldwide.

They can also use the map to draw a box over any area, and the website calculates the total land area selected and provides estimates on potential breeding bird pairs and migration layovers if the land were turned into a bird habitat.

How we built it

We made use of the Google Maps API such as Google Satellite, and Custom Styles and Markers.

Challenges we ran into

Getting information on the numerous endangered birds and cleaning up the data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of the being able to pull all the data for the site such as major bird sanctuaries across the globe, bird habitat loss, and bird species information from IUCN.

What we learned

A lot about how to work with geospatial data, integrate Google Maps with dynamic overlays, and use Supabase to manage real-time environmental datasets. Also gained insight into concerning bird conservation challenges worldwide.

What's next for BirdWatch

More interactive datasets about bird migration and breeding locations.
