Inspiration
According to an ancient tale from the Middle East, birds are the happiest creatures on Earth. Long ago, before humans roamed the planet, the world was harsh. Sandstorms constantly swept across the coast killing crops and water was considered rarer than gold. Creatures huddled in darkness waiting for this time of darkness to pass, yet it never did. The birds were a creature of importance in these times, warning their fellow beasts of storms and dangers before they struck, flying faster than the storms could chase them. One faithful evening, the goddess Tutela took pity on this land and granted boons to all those who walked upon her land. To the camels she granted the ability to never be thirsty. To the goats she allowed for them to never go hungry. Yet, she knew not what to give the birds of the sky. They could fly away from this calamity yet they chose to save their fellow beasts. Instead they risked feathers and beak to warn these creatures. What boon she thought, could she gift such a fine creature. After some inner reflection, she determined to gift the creature the finest gift of all: happiness. To this day you can still hear the happy chirps of the Birds as they thank Tutela for her wisdom.
We wanted to do something similar yet we had two slight problems: we had neither Tutela's magic nor are humans so simple as birds. So we decided to create the next best thing, a mental health app.
What it does
Our app has two fundamental purposes. First we wanted to create an environment that allowed individuals to truly express themselves. According to Kary 20, this is the first step towards happiness. We do this primarily through our daily logs. Each morning users are tasked with a prompt to answer detailing the most prevalent emotions of the user. This serves as a progress towards self improvement helping the user understand how they feel. We next task the user with completing actions that help create a more stable atmosphere. For instance our mediation section of our app provides a detailed selection of how to calm ones. The next ideal we wished to accomplish was a tracking of the emotional health of the user. For instance every day and every night has a scale of ranking from 1-5. This data is then graphed over time so the user can understand what causes happiness or even sadness in their lives and if they are on a task for self improvement. To supplement this part of the project we also added a checklist section. Here we detailed goals that the user wanted to accomplish for the day. We also add several simple emotional goals to the list as well such as "Compliment yourself once today" or "Take 5 minutes to thank someone meaningful in your life."
All together this app provides a strong mental health app that is in a strong position to help the most people. Unlike most apps on the market, we truly provide consumers with a completely free app and with all the tools needed for self reflection and betterment.
How we built it
We chose to use the flutter platform to build our app with the programming language dart.
What's next for Bird Brain
The future of Bird Brain has several goals. First we wish to add a level of sentiment analysis to our data. For instance, an analysis of the text from the goal section could provide better goal oriented tasks for the consumer. We could also leverage the use of novel challenges that are designed to improve the users day.
