Inspiration

I'm an amateur parrot owners in Nanjing. I have 40 cockatiels and 2 budgies and also 1 magpie. The thing is, Nanjing (along with many other cities across the globe) is a very difficult place for parrot owners to get advice: it has no rehabilitation center, no avian specialist, few parrot owner, and it took me so long to finally know I need to know for raising a parrot properly!

Now, LLMs provides an excellent opportunity to remedy that. With ParrotPal, the app that I just built, it can actually produce good advice for new bird owners. Which is fantastic!

What it does

ParrotPal can give general advice regarding Hand Rearing

  • How often should I feed them?
  • How thick should the formula be?
  • What to do if there's a crop stasis problem? Also, it can provide Basic Daily Advice:
  • What temprature should I keep them in?
  • What should I feed them?
  • Is vitamin supplement necessary? and also it can give Basic Medical Advice which is very useful if you do not have an avian vet nearby and the symptoms not severe. The examples are
  • What do I do if my cockatiel has swollen eyes?
  • What should I do if my parakeet has a broken nail and cannot stop bleeding? ...

Moreover, it can also produce a very professional history of bird for users to copy and print before visiting apps. I have included vet-approved questions to make sure it's useful and accurate and can actually help!

It can also switch languages as we make a special option for choosing the preferred language. Makes it better!

How we built it

I built it with PartyRock and the avian vet notebook I had.

Challenges we ran into

The finetuning is limited. It can be so much more helpful if I can include the quick diagnosis books for avian patients in it. It'll really help. For example, this app still does not link "yellowish urates" to liver damage. I belive it's because general LLMs have its limitation. But otherwise it makes good diagnosis and suggest enough possibilities to still make it useful.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I have tried several use cases and it's accurate! It gives good advice! I'm currently asking other bird keepers to try it out to keep making it better.

What we learned

Prompting is important.

What's next for ParrotPal - your professional feathered friend consultant

I'm hoping for finetuning it with specific use of expertese knowledge.
