Inspiration
In our everyday lives, we are so focused on our own problems that we fail to notice nature in all its diversity. The weed on your doorstep? You walk past it without seeing the fascinating mechanism it uses to spread its seeds. The birds by the lake that pass by once a year? You ignore them, unaware that they have traveled hundreds of miles without pause. By documenting your encounters with nature, you become aware of how complex and fascinating it is. A first step that will surely trigger actions to protect nature.
What it does
The app allows the user to save encounters with animals or plants in the form of an entry. These are then saved in one of the following categories: mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects, trees, shrubs, flowers, grasses, fruits/vegetables
The user has the option to enter photos, the name, the genus/family and a fun fact about the organism. On the start page, the most recent entry is displayed, as well as statistics with how many entries per category the user has entered.
How we built it and challenges I ran into
I used procreate to design the more complicated pages as a draft and the logo (with the help of AI).
To build the app I used Flutter and Dart. Since I never worked with databases or made an app that need databases, I found the back end quite difficult. So to visualize the main functions, I hardcoded some sample data. Due to lack of time and a stack overflow, I'm not able to display the statistic and the detail-pages of entries. However you can see the idea of how it should look like in the photos below
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm happy that I was able to finish (nearly) all of the front end and most of the back end.
What's next for Biosphere
The first step is to solve the issues I'm currently facing. In the next steps I will add databases and new functionalities, like a page with tips on how to reduce waste or how to help the local bees, etc.
