Inspiration
We wanted to help people (and ourselves) indentify the healthy/unhealthy products in a very simple and easy way.
What it does
It scans the barcodes of the products and tells you if a product is healthy or not, highlighting the unhealthy ingredients.
How we built it
Using Android Studio to create the mobile app, MySQL to create the database with the products information and using Scrapy (python) to crawl information of the products from the web.
Challenges we ran into
We didn't have experience neither in Android nor in Python as in our career (Telecommunications Engineering in UPC) we have only used Java, so everything has been a challenge for us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that even with the short amout of time we have managed to launch a quite good-looking application, that it does what it has to do well and that the web-scrapping section is already gathering images, barcodes and nutritional information for us.
What we learned
In one hand, none of us had any previous experience with Android developement nor web scrapping, so we have had to search information about every line we have typed. At the beggining it was hard, but at the end we felt way more comfortable, so we are pretty satisfied with the experience.
What's next for BioScan
We have the intention to mantain it, and with some help from web-scrapping and maybe some external help from a nutritionist, to be able to publish it one day and make it available for everyone.
