Inspiration

We were inspired by the challenges faced by scientists in Nigeria and West Africa—fragmented research, lack of collaboration, and slow knowledge transfer. We wanted to create a platform where research is open, collaborative, and accelerated by AI.

What it does

Bioncolab is a collaborative research platform where scientists and innovators can:

  • Create and join Colabs (research hubs).
  • Launch and solve Challenges.
  • Use AI agents for literature review, paper analysis, and experiment design.
  • Collaborate seamlessly across institutions and disciplines.

How we built it

  • Frontend: Next.js with TailwindCSS for a clean, modern UI.
  • Backend & Auth: Supabase for authentication, real-time data, and secure storage.
  • AI Integration: Gemini API powering agents for literature and data analysis.
  • Architecture: Modular system supporting individuals and institutions, with both open and private research spaces.

Challenges we ran into

  • Encouraging early adoption in the highly conservative research community.
  • Handling large datasets efficiently while keeping infrastructure costs manageable.
  • Balancing scientific rigor with usability and simplicity.
  • Building trust for institutions to share sensitive data securely.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully onboarded early users who created Colabs and tested AI agents.
  • Built a working MVP in a short time with limited resources.
  • Validated that AI-powered research assistance significantly improves efficiency.
  • Formed a multidisciplinary team combining tech, science, and healthcare expertise.

What we learned

  • AI agents can transform how fast knowledge is synthesized from vast research.

What's next for Bioncolab

  • Expand onboarding to universities and research institutions.
  • Introduce version-controlled labs for experiments.
  • Enhance AI co-pilot with data visualization and simulation capabilities.
  • Build partnerships to scale across Africa, making Bioncolab the hub for open, AI-powered biomedical research.
