Inspiration
I have always wanted to be a doctor because I wanted to fix things(applied to Med school 4x before doing Biochemistry). I hated that I couldn’t help when people suffered — blindness, glaucoma, genetic disorders, and so many unresolved diseases. The moment that truly struck me was looking into the eyes of a blind man who wished he could see again. I realized that everything depends on good research. AI is here — but what if it could not just read papers, but actually brainstorm with us toward real solutions? That thought inspired Bioncolab.
What it does
Bioncolab is a collaborative research platform where scientists and innovators can work together to tackle big problems. It combines the collective intelligence of researchers with AI agents that can rapidly review literature, analyze data, and suggest pathways forward. It is built as a hub where ideas turn into breakthroughs.
How its built
I built Bioncolab with:
1.Next.js + TailwindCSS for an intuitive UI. 2.Supabase for authentication and secure data management. 3.Gemini API powering AI agents for literature and data analysis. 4.A modular structure enabling both individuals and institutions to create challenges, collaborate in Colabs, and co-build solutions.
Challenges i ran into
1.Managing infrastructure for data-heavy processes with limited resources. 2.Designing AI outputs that are trustworthy, explainable, and useful. 3.Balancing scientific rigor with accessibility and simplicity.
Accomplishments that i am very proud of
1.Built a working MVP where users have already signed in, created Colabs, and tested AI agents. 2.Validated that AI-assisted literature review saves researchers hours of work. 3.Brought together a multidisciplinary founding team with tech, science, and healthcare expertise. 4.Sparked conversations with researchers and institutions excited about scaling this.
What i learned
1.Researchers need collaboration tools more than storage. 2.AI can accelerate knowledge discovery — but it must remain a co-pilot, not a replacement. 3.Building trust in the platform is as important as building features. 4.The vision must always stay grounded in the people we want to help.
What's next for Bioncolab
1.Scale onboarding to universities and research institutions across Nigeria, West Africa and the world. 2.Expand AI agents into drug discovery workflows and experiment simulations. 3.Launch version-controlled research labs for reproducibility and open science. 4.Position Bioncolab as the go-to hub for AI-powered biomedical breakthroughs.
