Our inspiration came from Micah's work with the high school and college level communities already teaching them genetic engineering with his brother's company The ODIN. They deliver a science experiment kit but it is very boring watching bacteria grow, and squirting clear liquid into a clear liquid. It was a goal of his since he began working there to visualize the process and develop more interested minds when it came to genetic engineering.
This app Biohack VR is a designed experiment that takes the user through a normal lab experiment using CRISPR Cas9 gene editing techniques.
It was a lot of hard work. Micah designed all of the assets in Google Tilt Brush, Troy engineered all of the scripts and animations in Unity, and our student partner Miles did all of the sound effects and music. There are so many more assets already made that we want to integrate, but we ran out of time.
We honestly didn't run into many challenges. We were very organized and prepared. We all assembled out task lists and checked off the needs as we could complete them.
We are proud of the fact that we finally got this project off the ground. We had been discussing it for a period of time but Troy and Micah were both caught up in finishing another project. Finally being given the time and purpose to go out and rapid prototype it was an amazing experience.
This hackathon taught us, that there is not a lot of time, but make use of it, and don't sleep if you don't have to because it might help you win.
We hope to finish this app for the future and get it into the hands of schools and students.
