Inspiration
Our inspiration was a documentary we had watched on the recently functionally extinct white northern rhinos who's species pertains to two females. We were shocked that we had never heard anything about this issue, and we wanted to spread awareness.
What it does
Our website provides educational information on different species as well as a fun place for kids to learn. Our website provides live streams and games as well as a pen pal system for kids to inquire with experts on different biodiversity facts.
How we built it
We began by sketching out what we wanted the website to look like in order to code as efficiently as possible. We used repl.it so that we could both collaborate at the same time. We started out just coding out HTML file and then changed the colors and designs in CSS.
Challenges we ran into
There were lots of challenges we ran into while coding this website. For one, Anthony had never coded anything in his life before, so he had to gather much of the content while Shaelin had to accomplish the bulk of the coding. We have never learned HTML in school before so there was a very limited range of knowledge which was limiting in some aspects of the website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that we were able to embed live streams into the website as well as create a map that allows you to click on different regions, all though only one works now.
What we learned
We both learned more about HTML, CSS, and Javascript throughout this process. We had to learn new syntax in order to accomplish some of the goals we had set in the beginning of the project. For example, we learned about embedding videos into the website so that we could include the live streams. We also learned a lot about working under a time constraint. Since we only had the weekend, we realized that we were not going to accomplish as much as we would have liked, so we had to prioritize.
What's next for Biodiversity
We would like to have some games on the website that could teach users about biodiversity in a fun and engaging way. Additionally, we would like to start some way for users to donate to organizations that help biodiversity through our website. We would also want to set up our pen pal feature so that people around the world could communicate with each other about wildlife in their region. It would be a great way to spread important information around the world.
