Inspiration
Look. If there's one thing our generation needs to do more of…it’s touching grass. We’ve lost our ability to connect, appreciate and document the beauty of nature.
This is why we built EcoLog, your AI pocket log that transforms your images of fauna and flaura into beautiful field guides!
As nature lovers, we wanted a place where our observations went beyond our memories. We wanted to document, connect, and appreciate the underrated, natural diversity of our environment, and encourage others to do the same! While hiking on trails or just walking around the neighborhood, we noticed many plant and insect species that intrigued us, but beyond keeping pictures in our phones' photo album, there was no convenient or efficient way to remember or learn more about these organisms.
The initial vision was to provide a platform for and connect with others who shared the same passion. We also hoped to encourage others to get outside and actually start paying attention to the different species that share the environment. We hope that EcoLog can be an incentive for people to grow their knowledge, curiosity, and exploration of diversity in nature. Other applications of EcoLog could even help advance scientific research and initiatives, allowing the public to contribute to important data collection. Monitoring and caring for our environment is everybody's role and EcoLog makes this responsibility more accessible, fun, and efficient!
What it does
EcoLog is a platform for nature enthusiasts, weekend hikers, animal lovers, climate activists, and anyone curious about the environment to document their discoveries and encounters. We are surrounded by an abundance of different plant and animal species, though we often fail to notice their presence. EcoLog encourages and facilitates outdoor adventure and learning.
Upon taking or uploading a picture, our app generates a stylized AI image (inspired by classic field guides and nature illustrations) and an informative, easy-to-understand description of the species in the photo. But EcoLog goes beyond just identification, it helps you organize and build your own growing nature collection. Users can create personalized “guides,” which function like virtual notebooks, to sort their discoveries by category, trip, or curiosity. Whether it’s “Urban Birds,” “Mosses of the Pacific Northwest,” or “Things I Found on My Morning Walk,” EcoLog gives people a meaningful and accessible way to document and revisit the life that catches their eye.
EcoLog incentivizes outdoor exploration and fosters curiosity. It’s designed to get people moving, looking closer, and learning about the ecosystems they’re part of. There's also a social layer: users can connect with friends and the broader community to share findings, see what others are discovering across the globe, and expand their understanding of nature beyond their local surroundings.
Challenges we ran into
As first-time front-end developers, this project was an ambitious idea that pushed our abilities in code and design. We had to understand how to run python and complicated models for the first time, overcome Figma design issues and combine a front end and back end in a seamless manner.
Figuring out which models to utilize while balancing API costs, desired outcomes for the drawings and feasibility was a big time sink as some didn't work as well as we'd hoped. Additionally, we wanted to add more functionality to the app with storing and login features but didn't have the bandwith and scope in this hackathon - will be future commits down the line!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud to have a working Flask app that combines the power of two wonderful AI models together in a unique use case and implementation. We've realized that sometimes it's not about reinventing the wheel, but putting two existing things together in a new way! 💡 We think that EcoLog is not only creative, but innovative and allows people to connect over nature in an authentic and user-friendly focused app. Combining our passion for nature and technology was the perfect way to feel accomplished this weekend at HackThe6ix!
What's next for EcoLog: Your Pocket AI Field Guide
We see EcoLog as more than just a personal nature journal; it has the potential to become a tool with real scientific and environmental impact. In the future, EcoLog could be used by researchers and conservationists to crowdsource valuable ecological data, using user-reported entries to track biodiversity trends, observe migration patterns, or monitor endangered species across different regions.
Imagine a platform where everyday explorers contribute to large-scale environmental research simply by uploading what they find. EcoLog could help scientists gather real-time data on species sightings, ecosystem health, seasonal shifts, and more, especially in areas where traditional field studies are limited.
We also want to build in features like offline functionality for remote areas, expert verification, and integration with public environmental databases. EcoLog has the potential to bridge the gap between casual nature lovers and professional ecological research, creating a shared space where knowledge, curiosity, and conservation intersect.
