INSPIRATION: Restaurant owners sell their waste cooking oil to small restaurants and Dhabas which is completely illegal, and it is one of the major reasons for cardiovascular disease and cancer because it is carcinogenic. Improperly disposed of waste cooking oil is a threat to the environment and causing produced harmful gases, contaminated soil, and polluted water supplies. Household drains their waste cooking into sewerage line it can cause sewer blockages and other major plumbing problems because sewage systems are not designed to filter out fats, oils, and greases (FOG). It requires a heavy cost to repair the sewerage line from this significant damage. Finally, this blockage is completely disrupting your daily life and during rain, we all have suffered sewerage/gutter overflow all over in Pakistan.

WHAT IT DOES: We will collect waste cooking oil from restaurants, hotels, and households through our mobile application (BioBeing) and then convert it into Bio-Diesel. The application will have two roles. Restaurant & Driver. The collection flow will be through the BioBeing application, invoices, and revenue of the oil will be calculated and maintained within the application. Biodiesel is a versatile biofuel that is renewable, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly as its combustion adds only biogenic carbon to the atmosphere and it can be used to power any diesel engine without any modification.

HOW I BUILT IT: The Mobile Application Platform: I used Android native technology with Android Studio and the latest Material Design and MVC design pattern to develop the mobile application of BioBeing. I used Firebase Email/Password Authentication for user management. Firebase Realtime Database to store data, GeoFire and Database Indexing to get nearby restaurants within a radius of 200kms. I used the latest Google Maps and Google Play Service to achieve the features of our app. The Onsite Project: The first step of our biodiesel process is the collection of used cooking oil. A large amount of oil comes from commercial fryers at local restaurants, food processors, and any business that serves food, as well as home kitchens. All kinds of cooking oil can be used, including soy, vegetable, canola, and animal fats. After used cooking oil is collected, the next step is refinement. When you use oil repeatedly, the high heat starts to break down the molecules. Fatty acid particles detach from the rest of the molecule and start to float freely. This FFAs can’t be converted into biodiesel directly. Cooking oil goes through a process called transesterification. Transesterification is the chemical process that transforms waste oil into diesel fuel. During this process, we combine an ester with alcohol. After transesterification is complete, the biodiesel is ready to use. The glycerin is separated out and can be used as an ingredient in cleaning products, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

CHALLENGES I RAN INTO: Waste cooking oil is one of the energy sources for its unique composition which contains glycerol, it can be a good base for producing biodiesel. We used renewable energy sources as heat sources and utility for our production processes in order to reduce our product cost. After conducting several iterations, we have found the optimal condition for biodiesel production. Conventional biodiesel separation techniques required 24 hrs. but our biodiesel separation time is 10 mins which helps us to produce a mass quantity.

DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES: The Firebase cloud functions were inaccessible due to the lack of a credit card to switch to their Blaze plan. I have implemented cloud functions for firebase cloud messaging notifications, but I couldn't integrate it. Google has introduced a new Google Play Console and it is not working properly with my paid subscription account, I have created a support ticket as well for this. I submitted our app in an internal test at the Google Play Console. It says it is published and ready to test but the link fails to open. I am submitting an APK over Google Drive just for backup. ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT I’M PROUD OF: According to a report by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), biodiesel produces 78.5 percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions than petroleum diesel and act as carbon sinks while they grow-they capture carbon. Also, vehicles that run on biodiesel achieve a 30% fuel economy than petroleum-based diesel engines. When you factor both the reduced emissions and the carbon capture factor, biofuels come out on top. As well, Biogas has zero net greenhouse emissions because the CO₂ that is released into the atmosphere when it burns is no more than what was drawn down from the atmosphere when the organic matter was first grown.
As of now, the fuel sources i.e. fossil fuels that are currently in use are exhausting out very rapidly. It is now also become a matter of global concern and the world is already looking for alternatives against conventional fuel sources. It is also impacting energy prices. The price of energy is rising exponentially and is predicted to be at its peak by 2050. This increase in price will definitely impact the direct related commercial and as well as consumer sectors. For the world, biodiesel is the only option left as an alternative to depleting fossil fuels

WHAT I LEARNED: It is a common anxiety in today’s world that fossil fuels will be exhausted soon. The price of energy is rising unceasingly and is predicted to be at its peak by 2050. The depletion of fossil fuel forces the world to look for alternative ways for energy production. The most ideal way is the production of biodiesel from waste cooking oil.

WHAT NEXT FOR BIOBEING: Our next target is to capture the commercial market because Pakistan plans to add a 20 percent share of renewables by 2025 and 30 percent by 2030. We will provide huge employment to young students which helps to generate extra income for better education by the collection of waste cooking through our Mobile application platform. We'll continue developing the platform further introducing an iOS application for restaurant/homeowners, and also set up an administration mobile application for the management team. We plan to introduce the BioBeing points system to further reward our drivers and oil-sellers(restaurants). We plan. to launch our application in the local market by New Years.
