Inspiration

After COVID got in our country (Costa Rica) all sport events got cancelled. It affected athletes, trainers, families and society in general. We have a small sport psychology project with my wife and decided to look for ways to improve this situation for sport related people.

What it does

It helps people recreate and release tension, learn sport subjects and bio-education; practice sustainable rural tourism and explore natural areas while getting to know other sport related people and/or enjoy with their teams and families.

How we built it

We chose trekking as the first sport/physical activity, and selected a natural area (Turrialba Volcano) with a very preliminary rural tourism development; made an alliance with local guides and farm owners; then scouted the area to design a hiking course that we can adapt to the sport psychology subjects we want to teach, and the bio-learning opportunities available. Set up stop/stations and all the 'tour' logistics so we can do some pilots form testing.

Challenges we ran into

Getting all permits and insurance coverage, defining logistics, explaining and inviting sport related people to the test tours, adapting all education materials/logistics for outdoors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We got Olympic and elite athletes, trainers and family members to participate in the test pilots. Also sport professionals like nutritionists, psychologists, physiotherapists, sport managers and coaches.

We area helping the local guides improve the quality of their service, also some of the local farms to have land destined for ecotourism instead of agriculture or cattle use.

We are now offering to the public 3 different hiking routes/distances in the area all with sport psychology teachings.

What we learned

We need to improve marketing and sales, and get more equipment for better enjoyment for participants.

What's next for BioAdventures : Learn, Move & Explore

For the trekking routes already set, we are preparing other learning subjects to provide with more sport professionals, so the offer will grow next with 5 'tours' teaching: sport-family support, mindfulness, yoga for sport women, sport-nutrition and physiotherapy.

We're also preparing test pilots for having Bio-Adventures for mountain biking, rafting and canyoning.
