What it does
Outputs her family tree in list format, grouping by generation and relationship to Bingle Bertha. The user can also choose members of the family tree to learn more about by typing the name of the family member when prompted in the terminal.
How we built it
Using inheritance and polymorphism concepts in C++.
Challenges we ran into
As this was our first hackathon, we underestimated how difficult it would be to build a project from scratch. We ran into many errors with our logic and how we created the program, so we had to reevaluate our knowledge of pure virtual functions and abstract classes many times.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a program from scratch (unlike what we're used to from our courses) and found real-world applications for the concepts we recently covered in lecture. Additionally, we ended up with a product that operated as we originally intended, which was really cool.
What we learned
We strengthened our understanding of C++ concepts, such as inheritance and polymorphism, as well as test-driven development and writing our own Makefile. We also learned how to build our own programs from scratch.
What's next for Bingle Bertha Birth Botanical
We want to add more user input options, such as allowing users to add people to the family tree. Additionally, we want to create a nicer user interface that shows the family tree in more of a tree format, instead of a list. We also want to add options to increase the types of roles that are available, such as adding a category for "other" people like neighbors or teachers.
The Poem of Bingle Bertha
Bingle Bertha, my stuffed dino friend,
She's got a weight that just won't bend.
Her scales are bright and colors bold,
She's the coolest dino I know, I'm told.
Though she's heavy and hard to carry,
All her friends find her quite merry.
They flock around her, big and small,
For Bingle Bertha, they love all.
She's got a roar that shakes the ground,
And a smile that turns frowns upside down.
She's got a heart as big as a T-Rex,
And she's always ready to flex.
Her family's huge, with cousins galore,
But Bingle Bertha's the one they adore.
They love her spikes and her cute little toes,
And every time she moves, her charm just grows.
So if you see Bingle Bertha around,
Don't be afraid to make a sound.
She may be heavy, but she's all love,
And being her friend is a blessing from above.
With puns like these, you're sure to grin,
Bingle Bertha's got dino-mite within.
So grab your friends and give a cheer,
For Bingle Bertha, the dino so dear!
