Inspiration

We noticed that many people are confused about which items are actually recyclable, leading to significant waste contamination. We wanted to create a seamless hands-free experience that could provide instant answers in the kitchen. Our goal was to make sustainable living accessible through the power of Alexa+ interfaces.

What it does

BinBrain allows users to describe an item they are holding via their Alexa device. The system processes the input to determine if the item belongs in the recycling, compost, or landfill. It then provides specific instructions on how to prepare the item for proper disposal.

How we built it

We developed the backend using Python and hosted the logic on AWS Lambda for scalability. We used Amazon Comprehend to perform natural language processing on the user's voice descriptions. The integration was handled via the boto3 SDK to connect our AWS services with the Alexa skills.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was accurately mapping vague user descriptions to specific waste categories using only text analysis. We also struggled to ensure the latency between the voice input and the response was low enough for a natural conversation. We refined our prompts for the NLP engine to handle ambiguous material names.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of successfully integrating Amazon Comprehend with the Alexa+ track to create a conversational flow. The system handles complex item descriptions with surprising accuracy. We built a fully functional prototype that feels genuinely helpful in a real-world environment.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the nuances of natural language understanding when applied to environmental data. We also gained deep experience in how to optimize Python functions for AWS Lambda response times. Understanding the specific capabilities of the Alexa+ surface helped us shape the interaction design effectively.

What's next for BinBrain

We plan to incorporate image recognition capabilities so users can simply show an item to a camera. We want to expand our database to include local municipal regulations for different cities. This will make BinBrain an even more accurate tool for global recycling efforts.
