Inspiration

As the students of Mount Holyoke College, we’ve always wondered about the steps our college has taken to create a sustainable campus, especially when it comes to the reduction of waste material. A number of items in the trash can be recycled but the question was always how and where. So we decided to make an app that would help people sort and recycle things they use daily!

What it does

We found that the reason why people don't recycle things is that they don't know how to recycle and where to recycle. So we made BIN to help people identify the categories of disposable and non-disposable things by providing introductions to each of them. Also, BIN gives people suggestions on where the nearest recycling facilities are to make it convenient. After each recycling, people will get points, which can encourage them to recycle more.

How we built it

Figma XCode Swift

Challenges we ran into

We successfully brainstormed and got a great idea. However, as beginners, we don't know how to turn our ideas into codes and visualize BIN into an app or website. We tried to use swift code to visualize everything, but we can't finish it because of the time constraint..

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of the concept of our application. When it comes to sustainability, the first step is knowledge distribution. And when gaining this knowledge is made easy to your fingertips, we are able to reach out to a huge number of audiences to make a small difference in the world.

What we learned

We learned the importance of prototyping our projects. We’ve realized that it’s a good first step to assemble all of our ideas. We’ve never used platforms like Figma, XCode, and Swift before so getting everything to work was a huge learning process for all of us.

What's next for BIN

After having more knowledge of making apps, we will write code to make BIN a real app! Then we want to release it on the App Store and Google Play to help more people.
