BillTrip

Inspiration

The inspiration behind BillTrip came from the need to make travel planning and hotel booking more convenient, organized, and accessible. Many travelers face difficulties when searching for accommodation, managing booking information, and finding a simple platform that brings these activities together. We wanted to create a platform that could simplify the booking experience while giving users a smooth and user-friendly interface.

As a frontend developer, I was also inspired by the opportunity to apply my web development skills to a real-world problem and build a project that could grow into a useful travel solution.

What it does

BillTrip is a hotel booking platform designed to help users explore accommodation options and manage their booking activities through a web interface.

The project focuses on providing a simple and responsive experience where users can:

  • Create an account and log in securely.
  • Browse available accommodation options.
  • View relevant hotel information.
  • Manage their account details.
  • Access booking-related features.
  • Reset their password when necessary.

The platform is designed with usability, accessibility, and a clean interface in mind.

How we built it

We built BillTrip using a combination of frontend and backend web technologies.

  • HTML — Used to structure the web pages.
  • CSS — Used to style the interface and create a responsive design.
  • JavaScript — Used to add interactivity and improve the user experience.
  • Bootstrap — Used for responsive layouts and reusable interface components.
  • PHP — Used for server-side processing, authentication, and application logic.
  • MySQL — Used to store user and application data.
  • XAMPP — Used as the local development environment.
  • PDO — Used to establish a more secure connection between PHP and the database.
  • SweetAlert2 — Used to provide user-friendly notifications and alerts.

We organized the project into reusable components, including configuration files, headers, footers, authentication processes, and helper functions. This made the code easier to maintain and allowed us to develop and test individual features more efficiently.

Challenges we ran into

During development, we encountered several challenges, including:

  • Database connection and configuration: Setting up the database correctly and ensuring the application communicated with it properly required careful configuration.
  • User authentication: Implementing registration, login, email verification, and password-reset functionality required attention to security and validation.
  • Session management: Managing user sessions and displaying success or error messages without triggering alerts at the wrong time was challenging.
  • Responsive design: Making the interface look good across different screen sizes required testing and adjusting layouts.
  • Debugging: Identifying and fixing errors in PHP, JavaScript, and database queries helped us understand how different parts of the application work together.

We addressed these challenges through research, testing, debugging, and improving the structure of the code.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building a functional hotel booking platform that combines frontend design with backend functionality. Some of our key accomplishments include:

  • Creating a responsive and user-friendly interface.
  • Implementing user registration and login functionality.
  • Connecting the application to a MySQL database.
  • Adding email verification and password-reset features.
  • Organizing the project into reusable and maintainable files.
  • Applying security practices such as password hashing and prepared statements.
  • Gaining practical experience building a full-stack web application.

Most importantly, the project helped transform our knowledge of web development into a practical application.

What we learned

Working on BillTrip taught us that building a web application involves more than creating attractive pages. We learned how frontend and backend technologies communicate, how databases support applications, and how important security and proper error handling are.

We also improved our understanding of:

  • PHP and MySQL integration.
  • User authentication and session handling.
  • Form validation and data processing.
  • Responsive web design.
  • Debugging and troubleshooting.
  • Organizing code for easier maintenance.
  • The importance of testing features before deployment.

The project also strengthened our problem-solving skills and taught us to approach development challenges step by step.

What's next

Our next goal is to improve BillTrip and make it closer to a complete, production-ready travel platform. Future improvements may include:

  • Adding a complete hotel search and filtering system.
  • Integrating real-time hotel availability.
  • Adding a secure online payment system.
  • Implementing booking confirmation emails.
  • Creating a user dashboard for managing reservations.
  • Adding hotel reviews and ratings.
  • Improving security and performance.
  • Deploying the platform online for real users.
  • Developing an administrator dashboard for managing hotels, users, and bookings.

We hope to continue improving BillTrip by adding features that make travel planning and accommodation booking easier and more reliable.
