Bill Nye, The Science Guy
The Onion
Egg Nog
Christmas in July
It is the combination of these four elements (in the proper proportions!) that lead to the creation of this idea. How did they come together so perfectly? ~*~Science~*~, with a capital S
What it does
Bill Nog serves the American public by providing it with the highest-quality, Scientific journalism.
How I built it
It's largely unfinished unfortunately, but I am basing the site design off of TheOnion.com and BillNye.com Initially planned to use Jekyll (https://jekyllrb.com), but am starting to reconsider the decision. To properly answer the question: I wrote some simple HTML and CSS and borrowed a lot more.
Challenges I ran into
Auto-generating certain elements of the front webpage; I accidentally broke a lot of the functionality :( Lack of original, satirical content
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
What I learned
Working alone was a bad idea
What's next for Bill Nog
I hope to get Bill Nog up and running within the next week or two. The plan is to have several writers beyond myself. The writing "staff" will very likely just be college students in STEM who want to write high-quality (and funny, of course) satirical articles about science.
Core functionality/process yet to be implemented:
1 writers write their articles in markup
2 writers submit their articles to Bill Nog (they will have some sort of ID that allows them to do so)
3 articles are sent through a part human, part computer editorial process; it shall be swift
4 Bill Nog will process those articles into HTML and post them in the relevant section (math, health, social science, etc.)
