Inspiration
In Singapore, bilingualism is a cornerstone of our identity, but many youths experience a steep "post-secondary drop-off" once they enter environments where English is the default. Young adults want to use their Mother Tongue (Mandarin, Malay, Tamil) in daily life, but they feel paiseh (embarrassed) and fear sounding awkward. We were inspired by the AWS Challenge Track to build a zero-pressure, highly engaging digital solution that gamifies language practice and bridges the gap between rigid textbook vocabulary and real-world conversation.
What it does
BiLingos is an offline-first Progressive Web App (PWA) that provides a safe environment to practice real-life conversational scenarios. It features a 3-step gamified loop:
- Warm-Up Phase: Users learn 8 to 10 colloquial phrases using native audio and English meanings before entering the chat.
- Interactive Tile-Builder: Instead of using intimidating foreign keyboards, users construct sentences by tapping word tiles based on their English intent.
- Spaced Repetition: Learned phrases enter an automated review cycle to ensure they become daily habits.
How we built it
We built the frontend using React and Vite for a lightning-fast, mobile-responsive PWA experience. To ensure the app remains completely frictionless and accessible, we engineered it with an offline-first architecture. All user progress, XP, and spaced-repetition phrasebooks are cached directly in the browser's localStorage. We also deployed the live application to Vercel to guarantee a clean, unblocked mobile UI.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest technical hurdles was managing the tokenization of complex scripts. We had to engineer a resilient text engine to handle precise Chinese character segmentations without breaking the UI or overflowing the tile bank. Additionally, we faced mobile routing and layout obstruction issues with our initial hosting platform, which required us to quickly pivot our deployment pipeline to Vercel right before the deadline to ensure the chat buttons were accessible.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of building a fully functional, offline-capable PWA that looks and feels like a highly polished native mobile application. Resolving critical deployment and routing bugs just hours before the deadline to deliver a flawless, presentation-ready UI was a massive win for us. We also take immense pride in our custom tile-building mechanic, which successfully gamifies complex languages without ever forcing users to download third-party keyboards.
What we learned
We gained deep hands-on experience with offline-first state management, handling complex string manipulation for different language scripts, and optimizing mobile UI/UX to ensure a completely frictionless, zero-login user journey.
What's next for BiLingos
Our current deployment prioritizes stage stability via a scripted fallback, but our architecture is primed for cloud scaling. Phase 2 of our roadmap involves routing our local community feedback queue through AWS API Gateway and Lambda into a DynamoDB table to crowdsource new dialects (like Hokkien and Cantonese). We also plan to integrate AWS Bedrock and Amazon Polly to power dynamic, real-time AI conversations.
