Inspiration
Our purpose is to provide a better infrastructure by allowing people to increase their awareness in their surroundings.
Commonly used maps such as Google Maps allow you to see ongoing traffic accidents and other general traffic information.
However, this feature does not exist for bikers or pedestrians who also are a central part of traffic. 60% of the British population considers biking to be a dangerous risk to take, partly because of lack of information on the road conditions.
Thus we decided to extend the functionality to the Google Map by creating our own tracking system for different pins, to provide a better infrastucture to cyclists and pedestrians. We would like to encourage people to use greener modes of transport by making cycling more safe by providing information and awareness.
What it does
BikeSafe is web application with a map showing custom markers, such as warning tags etc.
Users can visit the site to inform themselves about current warnings that have been reported and report new markers as well.
Users can search on a specific area and the map will update accordingly.
How we built it
Frontend: ReactJS (react-bootstrap)
Backend: ExpressJS
Database: Appwrite (docker)
Hosting: Netlify (static site)
Challenges we ran into
- Connecting Appwrite to the front -> Made a node backend running Express
- Google Maps API key configuration -> First time using Google Cloud Platform and their APIs
- Deployment: We tried deploying our application on Heroku, but faced issues regarding the docker container that is running AppWrite -> Static front hosted on Netlify. Appwrite and Express running locally for now.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Fully working map with ability to add new markers.
Search function updates the location in the map as well.
What we learned
Google Maps API Appwrite and docker
