Inspiration
With the rising popularity of social media and the rivalry between colleges across the midwest, we thought about creating a platform for the Big Ten college basketball, called “The Social Ten”.
What it does
Using a web developer, the user will be able to log in or create an account. When creating an account, the user will be prompted to create a username, input their first and last name, email address, password, and re-enter their password for confirmation. After logging in, they will be brought to the home page of our platform, where the user will be greeted and have the option to look at the statistics, college rankings, or sign out. When choosing “Statistics”, the user will see the statistics of each match colleges played. When the user clicks on “Colleges”, they will be brought to a page where it lists the college and each button will bring the user to the selected college’s ranking number and win-to-loss ratio. Lastly, when the user signs out, they will return to the main page(there will also be a message in the top left corner telling the user if they logged out successfully). If they try to sign up using a already made username or email the web will prevent you from doing so since all the account information is saved in our own database of user objects
How we built it
With the use of Python, Django, Html, BeautifulSoup, and CSS, we were able to construct our own online social media website for users that are interested in the Big Ten college basketball.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges that we ran into while working on our project was being exposed to new softwares, especially Django. With no experience of employing Django, we had to learn this software from the basics, where we would face many problems, such as not knowing how to format or what a certain default code's function executes, or literally a single comma crashing our entire code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to learn and create a project with new software such as django that we had no experience with prior to this Hackathon is something that our group is proud of. We were able to work well as a team, and learned more how to utilize github. We are happy about our design process, and the thought we put into making this project. Even though we may have not become experts by the end of this Hackathon, we were able to acquire a new skill that we could use in our future projects.
What we learned
From this Hackathon, we learned how to make use of new softwares for web developing, which was Django, and how we can next time stay more organized when learning a new software or language. We also improved our github use to work better in teams for future projects.
What's next for Big Ten Social Media Platform
With this project, we plan to improve and modernize the design of our pages to make it presentable to the public. Along the way, we will implement additional functions and interactive virtual activities in order to keep our audience engaged with our platform.
