Inspiration

I’ve always found myself stuck between two problems: wanting to walk more and wanting to use my phone less. I’d set goals but still end up scrolling endlessly. One day I thought — what if my phone actually made me earn my screen time by moving? That’s where Big Stepper came from.

What it does

Big Stepper locks the distracting apps I choose and only unlocks them once I hit a set number of daily steps. It’s a simple push to get moving, build consistency, and use my phone with more intention.

How I built it

Honestly, I just vibe-coded my way through it. I focused on getting the step tracking and app-locking features working first, then built a clean and minimal interface around it. At the moment of this submission, the app is still under review in the Play Store.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was making the step tracking reliable across different devices and making sure the locking system felt smooth instead of frustrating. Also, since I’m working solo, I had to balance coding, testing, and design all by myself.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I’m proud that I took this from just an idea in my head to a working app. Seeing testers actually walk more steps and get distracted less was super validating. The fact that I built something that sparks excitement and conversation feels like a win already.

What I learned

I learned how small nudges can lead to big behavior changes. People don’t need complex systems — they just need the right kind of push at the right time. I also learned to trust my process and keep iterating, even when I was literally vibe-coding my way through obstacles.

What's next for Big Stepper

Next, I want to add friend challenges, streak tracking, and rewards to keep people engaged long-term. I also plan on polishing the UI, listening to user feedback, and hopefully making Big Stepper a tool people rely on daily to stay active and distraction-free.
