Inspiration
I wanted to make a bunch of scratchers.
What it does
You travel around and scratch scratchers. The scratchers provide what you need to survive. Food, shelter, water, blood, bus tickets, you know Maslow's basic needs.
How we built it
Claude helped a bit with this one for coding. The mechanical pencil, sketchbook and in Aseprite.
Challenges we ran into
Time always a challenge. I also wanted to really get something that literally had a hook in the game. There are a lot of balancing things I would love to spend time with.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In order to get retention, a lot of games will reward players for returning daily. I wanted to explore some ways to get people to return without a standard daily reward system. We do this in a few ways.
- Your characters will bleed out and exit if you don't return to help them.
- Each city has a leader board, so you can manage how you position your party.
- I made scratching a lot of fun.
I always enjoy working with Dan, who did the music and tried to wrangle scope some. When it comes to asking for a lot in a short amount time, I'm great about asking. My expectations are always exceeded.
What we learned
I always learn a lot on these hackathons.
What's next for Big Scratcher
I'd really like to build out some more of the cities, and keep making a bunch more scratchers. Reddit is a great spot for asynchronous multi player games. It'll be fun to develop this out more. I'd love to get people to make their own scratchers and add a bunch more fun survival stories.
