Big Bro-The Friendly AI Buddy

Making tech talk simple for young minds

Inspiration-As someone who's always been curious about how things work, I wanted to build something that could help children understand complicated tech topics like AI and APIs in a fun, simple way. I thought: “What if kids had a friendly AI elder sibling to guide them?” That’s how Big Bro was born — a web-based AI chatbot with interactive learning cards, built especially for young learners.

What it does-Big Bro is an interactive learning assistant for children. It does two main things:

1)Chatbot Support: Kids can ask questions, and Big Bro responds in a friendly, easy-to-understand way powered by AI. 2)Learning Mode: Children can click on topics like “AI” or “API” and explore 8–9 subtopics explained in a fun and simple style. They can also click "How It Works" to understand the tech behind the scenes.

How we built it-Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript

1)Styling: Custom-made with a purple and black theme for a modern, kid-friendly look. 2)AI: We used an OpenRouter API call to generate chatbot responses in a way that's safe and helpful for children. 3)Transparency Feature: The “How It Works” popup teaches children how the chatbot thinks — encouraging learning through curiosity.

Challenges we ran into-Making the Chatbot Understandable: It was hard to make sure the AI answered in a child-friendly tone every time.

1)Designing the UI: While I had some past experience making websites, building a playful yet clean interface took time and creativity 2)API Integration: Using external AI services with safety and performance in mind was tricky at first. 3)Explaining Tech to Kids: It was a fun challenge to break down complex concepts like APIs into simple, joyful explanations.
