Inspiration

Renting near campus is a gamble. Listings promise “luxury student living,” but the truth is buried in hundreds of Google reviews about broken AC, ignored maintenance requests, and surprise fees. The Three Little Pigs already gave us a rating system: is this place straw, sticks, or brick? And who better to judge than the Big Bad Wolf, now a licensed building inspector?

What it does

Type the name of an apartment complex in Austin. The wolf reads what Google Maps reviewers say and gives a verdict:

Brick: solid, and the wolf can’t touch it
Sticks: shaky, with some red flags
Straw: blows right over

Each inspection includes:

A 0-100 huff-and-puff meter showing the quality of the building
The three biggest review themes, backed by short anonymized quotes as evidence
An animation where the matching pig house stands or collapses
Favorites list and a map of every apartment you’ve inspected

How we built it

SerpApi pulls Google Maps place data and reviews. An analysis step groups the reviews into themes such as maintenance, pests, noise, safety, and management, and turns them into the 0-100 score, which maps to Brick, Sticks, or Straw. The frontend presents everything in the wolf’s voice using the Gemini API, with the pig-house animation as a fun addition. A fixed formula is used to weigh each review and calculate a quality score for each building.

Challenges we ran into

Choosing the cutoffs between Brick, Sticks, and Straw
Matching the right property when complexes have similar names
Accurately limiting search results to only residential places in Austin
Keeping the quotes short and anonymized while still convincing
