Inspiration

BiBibble was inspired by the literacy crisis in the U.S., where many students, especially those from immigrant and low-income backgrounds, struggle to read at their target grade level. Research shows that literacy in a child’s first language helps them build skills in English, yet bilingual resources are limited. We wanted to create a tool that empowers bilingual children by valuing both languages, making literacy accessible and enjoyable.

What it does

Currently, BiBibble features bilingual stories that help kids build vocabulary and reading comprehension in an engaging way. Each story introduces key words in both languages, allowing kids to learn through context and repetition.

How we built it

We built BiBibble on Glitch, a beginner-friendly platform that allowed us to experiment and collaborate easily. Glitch provided the tools we needed to quickly bring our ideas to life, from coding the site to integrating bilingual stories. We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files on Glitch to create BiBibble’s interface and functionality. HTML and CSS helped us design a simple, user-friendly layout, while JavaScript added interactive elements, bringing our bilingual stories to life.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was that we’re both beginner coders, which made building BiBibble an ambitious project. We spent a lot of time troubleshooting and learning new coding skills on the go, from setting up the platform to creating interactive features. This experience pushed us to grow quickly and collaborate effectively.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud to have created a unique platform that not only targets literacy but also embraces cultural storytelling as a powerful tool. Seeing BiBibble come together as a game that fosters bilingual literacy while celebrating heritage has been a rewarding accomplishment.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the distinct needs of bilingual learners and the importance of creating educational tools that build on a child’s strengths in their first language. We also deepened our understanding of how to design engaging, educational games that maintain children’s interest and drive meaningful language development.

What's next for BiBibble

While we currently have stories, we’re excited to develop interactive features like games, flashcards, and a point-based reward system. These additions will make the experience even more immersive and allow kids to reinforce their skills in fun, hands-on ways.
