Inspiration
News stories are filled with bias. Can we allow users to get a better understanding of this issue?
What it does
BiasBeGone is a browser extension which detects which side of the political spectrum the user's news source leans towards, and provides other news sources on the same topic to explore the issue with an open and unbiased mind.
How I built it
A WebExtension was created to interact with user's news sources. Frontend was aided by the use of Bootstrap. Javascript was used for the logic. The source of the news bias database are samples from the service AllSides. Shout-out to AllSides for keeping us informed of our media biases.
Challenges I ran into
Fetching Google News RSS feed will constantly resulted in CORS. A configuration mistake was responsible for this issue. Acquiring large masses of reliable data also proved to be a challenge.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Creating an extension that is helping to increase awareness about news biases.
