Inspiration
Bhujal was inspired by the urgent need to combat groundwater depletion in India, particularly in regions like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi NCR, where overexploitation has led to critical water shortages. The motivation stems from the understanding that groundwater constitutes over 80% of drinking water in many areas, making its sustainable management essential for both human survival and environmental health.
What it does
Bhujal is a comprehensive technology-driven platform designed to:
Monitor Groundwater Levels: Provides real-time data on groundwater levels through a network of sensors and piezometers.
Optimize Borewell Site Selection: Utilizes georesistivity testing to identify the best locations for borewells, minimizing environmental impact and improving water yield.
Promote Community Sharing: Encourages users to share borewell resources within their communities, reducing the need for new installations and fostering collaboration.
Support Government Policy: Offers data-driven insights to aid government agencies in formulating sustainable groundwater policies.
How we built it
The development of Bhujal involved:
Integration of Technologies: Combining artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and geospatial technology to create a unified platform that continuously monitors groundwater levels.
Real-Time Data Collection: Implementing custom-built hardware devices linked to cloud systems for real-time data uploads, allowing for accurate monitoring and analysis.
AI Model Development: Creating a polynomial regression-based AI model capable of predicting future groundwater scenarios with up to 93% accuracy.
Challenges we ran into
The project faced several challenges, including:
Lack of Real-Time Data: The absence of comprehensive monitoring systems made it difficult to gather accurate groundwater level data.
Unregulated Borewell Usage: Over-extraction due to uncoordinated drilling practices complicated resource management efforts.
Limited Collaboration: Insufficient interaction between private users and government entities hindered effective groundwater governance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Bhujal has achieved significant milestones:
Recognition as Top 5 Finalist: Selected as one of the Top 5 Finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2023 Ideathon from over 16,000 teams across India.
Media Coverage: Featured in major outlets like Dainik Bhaskar, CNN, CNBC, and Jio Cinema, enhancing visibility and credibility.
Successful Pilot Testing: Conducted successful tests in Bilaspur District, registering over 200 borewells and validating the effectiveness of georesistivity testing at our university.
What we learned
Key lessons learned during the development of Bhujal include:
Importance of Data-Driven Decision Making: Real-time data is crucial for effective groundwater management and planning.
Need for Community Engagement: Fostering collaboration among users can significantly enhance resource management efforts.
Value of Government Support: Engaging with government agencies is essential for implementing sustainable policies backed by reliable data.
What's next for Bhujal
Future plans for Bhujal include:
Expansion of Features: Incorporating water recharge systems to replenish groundwater reserves using innovative techniques.
Tracking Water Consumption Patterns: Developing tools to analyze water usage trends, helping users adopt conservation practices.
Alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Ensuring that Bhujal contributes to clean water initiatives and responsible consumption practices globally.
By continuing to innovate and expand its offerings, Bhujal aims to make a lasting impact on groundwater sustainability for future generations.
