Inspiration

In India, especially in cities like Agra, millions of people struggle to get instant, trusted help in their own language. Tourists get lost, students need study help, and farmers need weather/mandi advice. I wanted to make Alexa+ a true BharatMitra - a friend who understands Hindi + English naturally.

What it does

BharatMitra is powered by Alexa+ and does:

  1. Speaks in Hinglish/Hindi & English - user jaisi bhasha bole waisi jawab.
  2. Tourist Guide: Agra ke best places, prices, timings, and scam alerts.
  3. Student Buddy: Homework help, exam tips, career guidance.
  4. Daily Problem Solver: Weather, mandi bhav, news, reminders with human-like memory.
  5. Uses Alexa+ conversational memory to remember past chats.

How we built it

We used Amazon Alexa+ SDK with advanced conversational AI, prompt engineering for Hindi context, and integrated real-time APIs for weather, maps, and education content. The persona is trained to be empathetic, local, and helpful.

Challenges we ran into

Making Alexa+ understand local Hindi slang, keeping answers short for voice, and making it feel like a friend, not a robot. We solved it with custom intents and cultural context tuning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a working prototype that can switch languages mid-sentence and provide truly local solutions - something no other Alexa Skill does for Bharat.

What we learned

We learned how powerful Alexa+ is for building next-gen, human-like voice companions that can solve real Bharat problems.

What's next for BharatMitra

Next we will add 10+ Indian languages, integrate UPI payments, and launch for farmers and small shopkeepers across UP.

Update 2 - Optimizing BharatMitra Performance

After shipping Update 1, I started optimizing BharatMitra for real village use cases.

What improved:

  • Reduced Lambda cold start time by adding DynamoDB cache layer
  • Added fallback for Hinglish: if Alexa does not understand pure Hindi, it now tries Hinglish
  • Improved error handling: "Mandi bhav" works even if user only says "bhav batao"

Next: Working on crop disease voice flow where farmer says "Gehu me pilapan hai" and gets instant remedy from Bedrock knowledge base.

Built solo with Alexa Skills Kit, Lambda, Bedrock, DynamoDB.

Update 2 - What I am building next

After Update 1, getting great feedback.

Currently working on:

  • Crop disease detection via voice: User can say "Patto par kale dhabbe hain" and get solution
  • Optimizing DynamoDB caching to reduce latency from 2.5s to under 1s
  • Adding more yojanas like PM Kisan and Fasal Bima voice flow

Will push code to GitHub this week.

Update 1 - BharatMitra Submitted to Amazon Hackathon

We have successfully built and submitted BharatMitra - Alexa Plus for Every Indian.

What is BharatMitra? It is a voice-first assistant for Indian farmers. Farmers can simply speak in Hindi or Hinglish like "Mandi bhav batao" or "Mausam kaisa hai" and Alexa will answer in their language. No typing needed.

How I built it (Solo Developer):

  • Backend: Alexa Skills Kit SDK and AWS Lambda in Python, 10+ custom intents for mandi bhav, mausam, yojana
  • AI: Amazon Bedrock Claude 3 Sonnet for Hindi understanding and farming advice
  • Data: OpenWeatherMap and Agmarknet APIs for real time data, DynamoDB for caching and farmer profiles
  • Testing: Tested extensively on Alexa Simulator and Echo Dot device

This was my first time building Alexa Plus with Bedrock together. It was challenging but I learned a lot about building voice-first AI for Bharat.

Next update will include crop disease help via voice.
